their shopping. Â Ann turned to him, âLetâs walk over and see what all the excitement is about.â
Lewey agreed, and they changed direction. Â As they approached the building men went out of their way tipping their hats and saying hello. Â
Upon entering the building, Leweyâs interest perked up. Â âWow! Â I canât believe all the things I see for sale here. Â Even the docks donât offer this variety. Â Wait until I tell Charles about this place.â
âLook, Ann, over there is anything a woman could want; hats, coats, and even dresses. Â Weâll have to look at them,â Rachel said as she tugged at Annâs sleeve.
âI suspect theyâre out dated.â Â Ann said.
In the middle of the building, two huge fireplaces burned six to eight foot logs that radiated heat and kept the building warm. Â âIn all my years I have never seen anything like this,â Lewey said. Â Â
Ann saw a man in uniform standing at the gun and knife stand. Â She nudged Rachel and whispered, âLook at that man in uniform; he has got to be the best looking man Iâve seen on this trip. Â Iâm sure heâs an officer.â
Ann couldnât keep her eyes off of the soldier. Â Feeling her gaze, he turned and his eyes locked with hers. Â Ann caught her breath as she felt a shiver start in her stomach and work its way up to catch in her throat. Â The soldier could not take his eyes off of her. Â She was the most beautiful young lady heâd ever seen with dark hair that flowed over her shoulders. Â He appeared to lose interest in what he was doing and moved gracefully toward them. Â As he approached, he saw her flawless complexion and stunning blue eyes. The officer was tall and muscular with brown hair flowing from underneath his hat and a smile that dazzled. Â With his eyes fixed on Ann, he took off his hat, bowed and announced, âLieutenant Phillip Matter at your service.â Â
Lewey was surprised by the soldierâs boldness, so he stepped in front of the girls. Â Nodding and introducing himself first, âIâm Lewey Hess.â Â Pointing first to Ann, âThis is Miss Ann Fairchild, and this is Miss Rachel Miller. Â Iâm their escort.â
The catch in her throat dissolved, and she politely nodded and said, âHow do you do.â
Rachel just nodded.
âMay I have the pleasure of escorting everyone through the market?â
Ann looked at Lewey who nodded yes.
âWhat brings two such beautiful young ladies to Sunbury?â Â Lieutenant Matter asked.
âCuriosity more than anything,â Ann responded.
âWeâve never seen anything like this place, not even in Philadelphia,â Rachel chimed in. Â âWhatâs it called?â
âPeople around here refer to it as the Market House and come from all over the area every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday to buy and barter goods. Â Itâs a big thing around here,â the Lieutenant informed them.
âAre you stationed at the fort,â Ann questioned.
âYes, I am. Â Iâm second in command,â he responded. Â âSo, youâre from Philadelphia?â he inquired as he glanced at Lewey.
âYes, we are indeed,â Lewey quickly replied.
They walked through the Market House talking and laughing all the while Phillip and Ann could not stop trading glances. Â The Lieutenant was quite an entertainer, and he knew most of the merchants. Â They stopped at a baked goods stand, âMay I interest you in one of these sweets? Â I canât resist; I stop here every Saturday.â
âIâm certainly interested,â Lewey joked.
The afternoon went quickly as the Lieutenant entertained them stopping at most of the stands. Â At the end of the tour the officer asked, âWould you join me for dinner tonight? Perhaps afterward I could escort the ladies to a dance, with your
