bath?â
âNo, not quite.â I laughed. âFeel free to go check it out, though, third door on your right. But I was talking about this.â I handed her the poster board. âItâs a list of house rules, which my parents wrote up and made me agree to. Itâs important to them, so if you could look at it and make sure youâre okay with the ground rules, thatâd be great.â
âGround rules?â she said, beginning to scan the list.
âYeah. If you donât mind. Just review them. I know it sounds dumb, butââ
âNo, itâs fine. I know how parents can be.â
âIâm going downstairs. Come on down when youâre ready,â I said.
As I started down the stairs, I heard Haleyâs voice. She didnât sound happy.
âYou guys asked her to live here? Without asking me about it first? Without even letting me meet her?â
I gulped. Oh, no. Why hadnât I thought of that? Of course Haley would have to approve of the plan, too. And there was nothing Haley hated more than being out of the loop.
âBut sheâs really nice,â Erica said.
âSo what? You know, you donât even live here!â Haley cried. âHow can you make decisions that affect the rest of us?â
âIâm so sorry,â I said as I walked into the kitchen. âWe shouldnât have asked her without asking you.â
Haley just glared at me.
âCome on, HaleyâIâm sorry. We got carried awayâwe just felt so bad because she didnât have a place to live. Sheâs been sleeping on Trudy and Robertâs living room floor,â I explained.
âBut we all agreed that weâd decide who was in the group together. Weâre fine with just the three of us, arenât we? Itâs not like we need a fourth person so we can pay less rent. We have no rent! And then you always have a place to sleep when you stay over,â she said to Erica.
Erica shrugged. âI can sleep on the sofa.â
Haley rolled her eyes. âCome on.â
âNothingâs final yet,â I told Haley. âMeet Blair first, okay? If for some reason you donât like her,â I said in a soft voice, âweâll just tell her that we changed our minds.â
âWe canât do that,â Sam said. âThatâll come off really rude. We already offered it to her. And she really needs a place.â
âWhatâs she doing up there, anyway? Moving in already?â Haley asked.
âIâll go get her,â I said. I headed for the stairs, but before I could go up them, I saw Blair heading down. âHey, Haleyâs homeâyouâve got to meet her.â
âOh, sure. Great. Love to,â she said with a smile.
âSo what did you think of the rules?â I asked as she reached the bottom of the stairs. âAre you going to be okay with them?â
Blair handed the poster board back to me. âTheyâre exactly the kind of rules my father would write up for me. In fact, I think he has, already. So itâs no problem. Iâm ready to sign on, if you guys are.â
âUm ⦠well, letâs see. Blair, this is Haley. Haley, Blair.â
âCool name.â Blair smiled at Haley.
âThanks.â Haley wouldnât quite look at her, at first.
I went to the fridge and got out a pitcher of lemonade. I sliced a few fresh wedges of lemon and tossed them into the pitcher. âSo, letâs go outside and talk. We still have some time before we have to get back to work.â
âWhere are you working?â Blair asked Haley as we filed out onto the porch.
On the way, Samantha grabbed four wineglasses from the cupboard. âJust to make it fun,â she said to me.
âOr, are you working, I guess I should ask,â Blair said to Haley as she settled into a chair. âNot everyone has to.â
âOh, I have to, all right,â Haley said.
