followed by Allyâs soothing words too low to understand.
âSheâs got a big heart.â Slade scanned the long barn. âI wonder how she funds this place.â
âI donât know.â Raquel kicked at gravel as Hunter chased a yellow kitten. âDonât scare him, Hunter. Coax him to you.â
A big white dog rounded the side of the barn with a leash and Ally in pursuit. âShe needs to work on her leash skills, but other than that, sheâs a great dog.â
A lonesome howl began in the barn and Ally cringed as Hunter petted the big white head. âI call her Snow, but you can give her a new name if you decide to take her home.â
Snow licked Hunterâs chin and he giggled.
âWhat do you say, Hunter? Want to take Snow home?â
âCan we?â
âSure.â
Hunter hugged his arms around Snowâs neck. âCan we get the yellow kitten, too?â
âUm, Iâm not sure heâs up for adoption.â
âHe is.â Ally smiled. âBut your mom may not be up for that.â
âHow is Snow with cats?â
âShe doesnât bother them.â
âHow is Blizzard with cats?â Raquel turned to Slade.
âFine.â He lowered his voice. âBut Blizzard and I wonât be here forever.â
Her mouth tightened. âWell, I have a big unused barn perfect for a kitten. Iâll take Snow and the kitten. Does he have a name? Is he neutered?â Raquel whispered.
âHis name is Tigger and he is neutered. All of the animals I have up for adoption are spayed or neutered.â
âCould I ask how you fund this place?â Slade picked the kitten up.
âThis was my family farm, so I own the property. My vet practice and pet gift shop pay the bills. I also charge adoption fees, which Raquel and I discussed on the phone. And I have a few local investors.â
âDo youââ Slade lowered his voice ââput any animals down?â
âNot unless theyâre too sick or injured to save.â
âIâd like to make a donation.â Slade handed Tigger to Raquel and slipped his checkbook out of his back pocket.
âThatâs wonderful.â Ally grinned. âI appreciate itâyou can make the check out to Allyâs Adopt-a-Pet.â
âDoes Snow by chance have a sibling?â he whispered.
âYes.â Ally flinched. âThatâs Flurry howling. I basically flipped a coin on which sister to show Hunter. Theyâve never been separated. Poor thing. Several of the kids from the church youth group come by to walk and play with the animals each evening. Iâll make sure she gets some extra attention tonight.â
âThis should cover a donation.â Slade handed her the check. âPlus adopting Flurry?â
Ally scanned the check and her eyes widened. âIt certainly will. Thank you, so much. Are you sure you donât want to see Flurry first?â
âNope, Flurryâs coming home with me. Blizzard needs company. And Snow can visit her.â
âIâll go get her. And Iâll make yâall receipts.â Ally left them alone again.
Hunter paid them no attention as he cuddled and played with Snow.
âThat was very sweet of you.â Raquel had the kitten purring.
âToo bad I wonât be around forever.â He cleared his throat. âI meanâfor Snow and Flurryâs sakes. But maybe the next few months will transition them until I have to leave.â
In the meantime, he had to resist Hunterâs innocent invitations. And Raquelâs charms.

Slade scanned the hallway and saw the signâOffice. How had he gotten roped into this? Career Day for the eighth-grade classâtalking pro baseball, when heâd barely gotten his feet wet in it. One of the kids on Hunterâs team had an older brother, and here he was.
Hopefully, the kid wouldnât be disappointed when he showed up to
