quickly.
âI know she doesnât. I just didnât realize it had been so long. I guess Iâm a little behind on my calls. Iâll call them tonight. Satisfied?â
âPromise?â
âScoutâs honor.â He raised his right hand.
She tried to frown at him, but couldnât hold back the smile because for an instant, the old Drew was back and he was pouring on the charm.
âSo are you going to tell me your good news or are you going to sit there and psychoanalyze me all morning?â he asked after a moment.
Sheâd been so excited about the tourâand so intent on making sure he was all rightâsheâd forgotten about her news. âOh, well...I just wanted to let you know...I had lunch with Seth and Emma.â
âSeth and Emma? I didnât even know you knew them.â
âI met Seth once through Rick years ago.â
Drew stared at her blankly, and she could see that he was wondering where she was going with this.
âSeth offered me a job at Evans Yachts.â
His face went from incredulous to angry in a matter of seconds. âHe what? â
âSeth offeredââ
âI heard you the first time,â he snapped. âI just donât understand why he would do that.â
Alison gaped at him, flabbergasted that he would be against the idea of her working for his cousin. âWhy on earth wouldnât he hire me? Iâm more than qualified. Not to mention the moneyââ
âThatâs not the point.â
âLook, if itâs about the trouble heâs had with the boatââ
âIâm glad he filled you in on that little detail.â
âI know about the explosion,â she said.
âIn that case, you know itâs not safe for you to work there.â
âIt was an isolated incident, Drew. He doesnât expect any more trouble.â
âYeah, well, drawing from my own experience, I can tell you trouble has a habit of showing up when you least expect it.â
âHeâs hired extra securityââ
âHe had no right to involve you.â
She glared at him, aware that her heart rate was up, that she was angry, that she didnât understand why heâd reacted so negatively. âYouâre overreacting.â
âYou donât know the whole story.â
âYeah? Well why donât you fill me in?â
âI canât. Damn it.â He reached for the phone. âIâm not going to let him do this.â
âItâs not your decision,â she said.
Ignoring her, he punched in numbers. She set her hand over his.
He gazed steadily at her from across the span of his desk, his eyes hard, his nostrils flaring slightly. âAlison, itâs not a good idea for you to work there.â
âIâm sorry you disapprove, but unless you can give me a good reason why I shouldnât, Iâm going to take the job.â
He stared at her for an interminable moment, then eased his hand from beneath hers. âDid he tell you what happened to the previous administrative assistant?â
âIf I recall, he married her.â
That shut him up, but it didnât soften the lines of worry etched into his face. All she could think was that he was too young to have such old eyes.
âLook,â she said, âitâs only a couple of days a week.â
âAt the Evans Yachts Building?â
âAt the boat building in the marina, so I wouldnât be anywhere near the corporate offices.â
âAlison, I donât know about this...â
âSethâs foreman is going nuts with administrative work. I mean, the manâs a whiz at building yachts, but you put him at a desk and heâs a walking disaster.â
âIâm not saying he doesnât need help. All Iâm saying is that youâre not the right person to do it.â
âItâs the perfect position for me, Drew. The hours are
