they?â
âWhy do you wear your clothes so baggy?â
Her eyebrows lifted slightly. âAnd what is the other question?â
âHow do you maintain a normal love life when you sign up for an extended nursing assignment?â
âThe second question is a lot easier to answer than the first. Right now Iâm not seeing anyone.â
âBut you do date?â
âYes, I date, Brandt. Why are you asking?â
He lifted a shoulder. âMaybe one of these days when Iâm not in this chair Iâd like to take you out for dinner to say thanks.â
âYou want to date your nurse?â
âBy that time you wonât be my nurse. And it really wonât be a date.â
Ciara stared at him in surprise, recalling his former hostility. âIt wasnât that long ago that you ordered me out of your home and now youâre talking about taking me out.â
âThatâs before I got to know you.â
âKnow me or came to the realization that Iâm not going anywhere?â
âBoth.â
âIâm sorry, but I canât go out with you.â
âCanât or wonât?â
âOkay, wonât. Iâve made it a practice not to date celebrities.â
âHave you ever dated one?â
She wanted to tell Brandt to let it go, that he shouldnât take her response as a rejection. âYes.â
âWho is he?â
âI canât tell you.â Ciara was more than surprised that heâd asked her something so personal. She was certain if sheâd answered his question Brandt would recognize the name.
A slight frown creased Brandtâs forehead. His curiosity about Ciara had just escalated. âAre you running away from him?â
âNo. Why would you say that?â
âIâ¦I donât know. Forgive me for being intrusive?â
Ciara flashed a sexy moue. âIâll think about it.â
âDonât think too long, Nurse Dennison.â
âI thought it was going to be Ciara and Brandt.â
âOops. My bad.â
She shook her head in amazement. âIâll accept the âmy bad,â but you are much too big for anything resembling âoopsâ to come out of your mouth.â
Throwing back his head, Brandt laughed. The sound came from deep within his chest and bubbled up like rolling thunder. A moment later her laughter joined his, both laughing until tears rolled down their cheeks. Without warning, he sobered, staring at her.
Ciara stopped laughing, and as their eyes met she felt a shiver run through her when Brandt rolled the chair close to where she felt the warmth of his breath on her face. âWhat are you doing?â The query was a breathless whisper.
Resting an arm over the back of her chair, Brandt pressed a kiss to her cheek. âThank you.â
âFor what?â
âFor making me laugh.â
Ciara felt his nearness stirring and disturbing. Brandt Wainwright was too large, too masculine and much too attractive a man to ignore completely. âIâm glad I can make you laugh.â
Brandt came closer without moving. âAnd Iâm glad youâre here.â
âDoes this mean youâre going to do whatever I tell you to do?â
He smiled. âIt all depends.â
âIt depends on what?â she asked.
âIt depends on how I feel when I wake up. If Iâm going to be in a bad mood, then I doubt Iâll be that cooperative. But if I wake up in a good mood then you can have your way with me.â
âThe only one who will have their way with you will be your physical therapist,â Ciara countered.
âDamn, you really know how to kill the mood.â
âThe mood?â she responded.
âIâd like to think it is. Itâs been a long time since Iâve shared the rooftop with a womanâa woman whoâs hiding behind a baggy top and an old-lady hairdo.â
âYou forgot the
