hand and said, âCome on. I just got it today, and itâs just so beautiful.â
I followed her into her room, which looked like a shrine to Dr. Dick. Photos of the two of them covered her dresser and were thumbtacked to a bulletin board. In all of them, Tammy had her hand pressed to Dr. Dayâs chest, as if claiming him as spoils.
There was a small table near her bed where she kept all her Dr. Day mementoesâmovie ticket stubs, matchbooks from restaurants, dried flowers, and a stack of greeting cards heâd given her over the years. I also knew that her two top drawers were stuffed with teddies, panties, and nighties that she donned exclusively for his benefit. Around the house she wore an oversized âArchie Bunker for Presidentâ T-shirt, holey granny-panties, and a ratty butt-sprung bathrobe.
Despite sleeping with a gynecologist, she wasnât having any orgasms either. Iâd asked her about it a few months after I first started having sex with Sonny and sheâd said, âIâm not sure. Sometimes I get a pleasant tingling during sex. Thatâs probably an orgasm, donât you think?â
âNo,â Iâd said. âI think itâs like sneezingâyouâll know it when youâre having it.â
âLook!â Tammy said, holding a long white dress encased in a see-through plastic garment bag. âI have to take it out for you to really appreciate it.â
I blinked in confusion. âIs that a fuckinâ wedding gown?â
âNot just any wedding gown,â she said, unzipping the bag and pulling free the dress. âItâs my wedding gown, and itâs the most beautiful one they had at Marlaâs House of Brides. Look at the detailing. There must be a million seed pearls.â
âOh, my God,â I said, sinking onto her twin bed and knocking to the floor a three-foot pink teddy bear, a Valentineâs gift from Deke. âHe did it. Dr. Dick actually left his wife. Iâve been wrong all along.â
âI told you not to call him that!â Tammy said, spreading out the train. âOf course, itâs not exactly official, but I know ââ
âWait a fuckinâ minute. Whaddya mean itâs not official? Has he left her or not?â
âJill! Dekeâs still in Boston at that medical conference,â she said, with a thin laugh. Dimples dented her cheeks. âI told you that when he comes back, Iâm positive heâs going to give me an engagement ring.â
âSo why in the world do you have a wedding dress?â
âWell, itâs inevitable that Deke and I are going to get married, so Iâm just thinking ahead. Marlaâs was having a sale, so I bought it.â
âTammyââ
âIâve decided that when he comes home, Iâm going to wear it.â She shook the gown at me. âIt looks so pretty on. Iâm convinced that when he sees me in this dress, heâll understand how badly I want to be his wife.â
âOh, God, Tammy,â I said softly. âI think he already knows that.â
âHe wants to marry me,â she said, stroking the dress with her hand. âI know he does. I can hear it in his voice.â
âLetâs put the dress up,â I said gently. âYou donât want to spoil it.â
âI know you have doubts, but you just donât know him like I do.â Her eyes were bright and hard, like quartz crystals.
âI bought some Little Debbies, and Laugh-In âs on tonight,â I said. Tammy had clearly crossed some line that made it impossible for me to argue with her. âYou wanna watch it with me?â
âNo, I think Iâll tidy up in here,â she said, tugging on the sleeve of her blouse. âBesides, I donât want to get involved in a show because Deke is gonna call tonight.â
I left her alone and ended up reading the latest issue of Good Housekeeping (Sonny
