turned and saw Lucky standing by the auctioneer's table. He tore off a check and handed it to the auctioneer who all but bowed in gratitude. Lucky looked up and directly at her. Feeling foolish, she smiled and gave a half wave. She stood where she was. He could come to her.
Lucky walked to her. She knew everyone was watching and could only imagine the gossips. He stood before her. He'd had a growth spurt and she was forced to look up to meet his eyes. His thick dark hair was deliberately unruly, his dark brown eyes were shrewd, and his skin was the dusky gold of someone who spent their days in the sun. A smile quirked his lips and stubble shadowed his chiseled jaw. Macy gulped. He had grown up. This man before her was only a hint of the geeky string bean she'd known in high school. Power and charisma radiated from him and Macy felt her nipples tighten.
Lucky smiled and lifted her hand to his lips. "Good to see you again, Macy. You look as lovely as ever." His eyes coolly assessed hers and he kept her hand at his lips a moment longer than he should have. Heat traveled down her skin and began to pool in her stomach.
She jerked her hand down. "Um, Matthew, so good to see you again."
"It's Lucky. I don’t go by Matthew anymore."
"Well, Lucky, it's good to see you. I hear you've done well for yourself." Macy cursed herself. It was the understatement of the year as Lucky's fortune rivaled a small country's GNP.
Lucky smiled, his teeth a flash of white in a bronzed face. "Ready for our date? I have the car pulled up."
"What, our date? Now? It's 10:00. Where are we going? I thought we would arrange something." Macy fidgeted with her purse and dropped the wrap she had been holding. Lucky smiled at her as he bent and picked the wrap up, holding it to himself and refusing to hand it over.
"The rules say that I get a day with you. 24 hours. I'm claiming it now. Unless you have prior responsibilities? He raised an eyebrow at her.
    "Um, well."
    "Kids?"
    "What? No."
"Dogs? Boyfriend? Husband? Work?" Lucky rattled off the questions and she knew it was a losing situation.
"No to all. I took tomorrow off from showing houses as I knew tonight would go long."
    "Perfect, let's go."
Macy gulped and searched for Susie. She caught her friend's eye as Lucky put his hand at the small of her back and propelled her from the ballroom. She waved feebly and Susie gave her two thumbs up. Macy rolled her eyes and tried to concentrate on walking. Lucky's hand burned through the silk of her dress. She squirmed at the heat. Her mind was whirling. What was happening here?
A Rolls Royce limo waited for them. It was tinted a dull gray and the partition was up as Macy slid onto tan leather seats as soft as butter. Champagne chilled in a bucket. She breathed deeply and fumbled in her purse. Macy briefly checked her makeup and reapplied lip gloss to her generous lips. She would need all of her tools to stay ahead of Lucky.
"Do you like barbecue?" Lucky asked as he slid into the car.
    "Um no, not typically."
Lucky quickly pressed a button. "Jim, stop for tacos instead." The limo pulled smoothly into traffic and Lucky reached over and motioned to the champagne. "Do you drink?"
"Sure, I'll have a small glass." Macy had to be careful to not drink too much. She had a tendency to be a little touchy feely when she had too much to drink.
"I'm starving. These charity dinners always serve the tiniest of portions of food. No wonder half the people end up making fools of themselves. They pour too much liquor and serve barely any food."
Macy nodded; she was starving. She decided to go on the offensive.
"So, Matthew, I mean Lucky, where are you taking me? I feel like you are trying to take me away or something."
"We're going to my ranch. Outside Austin." Macy gulped. That was several hours away. Was this going to be an overnight?
"Um, excuse me? That is hours away. What is your plan? I don’t have any clothes or my toiletries. And, I do not plan to sleep in my
