hearing the doctorâs words over and over as she sat outside the emergency room of the regional hospital. Jay had driven Lorene the twenty miles in record time with Alice and Jonah right behind them.
âThank you for coming,â she said to Jonah now. It was late and he looked tired. His eyes were laced with smoky circles of fatigue and his dark hair was messy and wind-blown. He held a plastic cup half-full of cold coffee.
âNot a problem.â He looked down the hall toward the double doors. âSoâ¦theyâre keeping her overnight?â
Alice nodded. âHer blood pressure needs to come down and they have to monitor the placenta. If sheâs better in a couple of days, she can go home. But sheâll have to stay in bed for the rest of the pregnancy. That wonât be easy for Lorene. She canât sit still for very long.â
Jay came through the doors and headed toward them. âTheyâre moving her to a private room in the maternity ward. She might have to stay in the hospital for the next few weeks. Of course, sheâs begging the doctor to let her go home and rest there, but Iâm afraid something will happen to her and the baby if sheâs not near the hospital.â
Alice nodded. âWeâll make sure she gets her rest, Jay. Donât worry.â
âHow can I not worry?â her brother-in-law asked. âWhat if something goes wrong? What would I do, Alice?â
âWe wonât let anything happen to them,â Alice answered. âYou have me, and your parents said theyâd help, remember?â
Jay nodded. âIâm sure glad they live nearby.â
Alice hugged him close. âThey love Lorene as much as you do. Weâll all make sure sheâs okay. We have to pray that sheâll be just fine.â
Jay pulled back. âIâm going to stay here for a while longer, just to make sure sheâs settled in. I might stay all night. I donât want to leave her.â
âWant me to stay, too?â Alice asked.
âNo, no. You go on home and check on the cats. You know the two she leaves food for out in the back garden?â
âIâll make sure the cats are fed,â Alice said, her heart going out to Jay. He loved her sister so much.
âI can help, too,â Jonah said, shrugging. âWith whatever you need, I mean. Anything.â
She glanced over at Jonah and read something therein his expression. Maybe he felt as she didâa bit envious but also very protective. The love between her sister and Jay was something to behold. Who wouldnât want that kind of devotion and unity? Alice prayed for the little baby theyâd waited so long to have. Please, Lord, keep them in Your heart. Help them.
Jonah took her by the arm. âYou look exhausted. Letâs get you home.â
âMaybe I should stay.â She glanced around at Jay.
âGo on with Jonah, you hear? My mamaâs coming back. She just went to get my dad a pack of peanuts from the vending machine. Sheâll send him home soon and, knowing her, sheâll stay right here with me.â
âYouâll call me if anything changes?â
Jay nodded. âYou know I will.â
Sheâd talked to Lorene earlier, but Alice wished she could see her again. âWill you tell herâ¦that I love her?â
âI will,â Jay said, grinning. âShe knows that, but sheâll want to hear it.â
Alice turned to Jonah. âI guess Iâm ready.â Then she waved to Jay. âIâll come by first thing tomorrow to check on her, okay?â
âOkay.â Jay sank down on one of the waiting room chairs, his head in his hands.
âI shouldnât leave him,â she said to Jonah as he escorted her toward the lobby and the parking lot.
âI could stay with you,â Jonah offered, stopping her just outside the doors.
The night was windy and chilly. Winter was coming soon. Alice
