own in return, then turned and paced away. âI donât have time to fuck with you and your secrets while Crisaâs out there in danger.â She turned again, facing them. âShe had a kid with him. With Gregor.â
Reaper hadnât thought much could surprise him, but this certainly did. He looked from Briar to Ilyana in disbelief.
âShe and Gregor were together and had a son, then Gregor took the kid. He still has him, as far as she knows,â Briar explained. âThatâs why she wants to find him so bad. To get her kid back.â
âHow do youââ Reaper began.
âI overheard her telling Roxy. And for what itâs worth, Ilyana, I totally get it. And Iâve got no problem with you going after him, and Iâll probably even help you by fulfilling my own need to slit the bastardâs throat and watch him bleed out. Slowly, I hope. But nobody is going anywhere until we find Crisa.â
âYou have a child?â Topaz whispered, staring at Ilyana and ignoring Briar now. âGregor has your son?â
âOh, my God,â Vixen whispered. âOh, my God, you poor thing. That poor child.â
âLook, Ilyana,â Seth told her, moving to stand beside her. âI know you donât like vamps, and we all get that. But youâre with us now. And youâd better believe weâll help you get your kid back safe and sound.â
âAbsolutely,â Topaz agreed.
Jack was frowning, his gaze jumping from the white-hats to Briar, and finally he shook his head in frustration. âThe kid is fine. Crisa isnât. I think itâs pretty easy to figure out where our first priority has to be.â
âBut we just got our first real clue as to where Gregor isââ Ilyana stopped herself, blinked, and started over. âHow do you know heâs fine?â
Jack held her eyes. âI saw him from time to time when I was with Gregor. You must have, too, Briar,â he added with a look her way.
âI didnât know who the hell he was. Gregor kept him pretty much away from the rest of us.â
âHeâs treated well, Ilyana. Heâs cared for, fed, kept healthy, never physically abused.â Jack nodded. âHeâll be fine. Crisa might not be, if we donât find her soon.â
âWe have a lead on Gregorâs whereabouts,â Ilyana argued. âIf we wait, heâll move on. We may lose our only chance.â She shook her head firmly. âNo, you all go after Crisa if you want. Iâm going to find my son.â
âWhat she said,â Briar snapped. âYou can go after her kid if you want, but Iâm going after Crisa. And unlike the mortal here, I donât fucking need anybodyâs help.â
âWait, wait, just calm down for a minute, both of you.â Reaper looked from one to the other, shaking his head. âRoxy, tell us what you found on the Internet. The short version.â
âA houseful of bodies, drained of blood, every item of value taken, no effort made to conceal the crime.â
In spite of herself, Briar asked, âWhere?â
âFresno, Salt Lake City, Dallas and Oklahoma City.â
Briar frowned. âI donâtââ
âThe same crime, committed in all four places, overnight. Bodies found this morning. The ones in Dallas were found before sunrise, and the initial reports include puncture wounds in the throats of the corpses, though later medical exams say there were no such wounds.â
âThey would vanish with the first touch of sunlight,â Seth muttered.
âAll right. All right.â Reaper paced away, then back again. âWe canât let Gregor slip away with an innocent child. Nor can we ignore the fact that Crisa, whoâs our charge, for all intents and purposes, and every bit as much an innocent child asâ¦asâ¦â He sent Ilyana a questioning look.
âMatthias. I call him Matt,â
