blame other women for wanting him.  It
was obvious, at least to her, that while Maggie’s fiancé and his ilk, might be
sharks in the business world, Griffin was the true predator in the room.  Just
the sight of him made her pussy clench and her breath come a little faster.
    She still
wanted to bite him in retaliation when Rachelle twittered and touched his arm.
    “Stephen,
this is the friend I was telling you about.”  Margaret was saying when the rush
had cleared from Becca’s ears.  “Rebecca Evans.  Becca, this is my fiancé,
Stephen.”
    Maggie's
Fiancé took her hand briefly and nodded.  “Pleasure,” he said.  Clearly feeling
mild politeness was all that was required.
    “Margaret,”
he said.  His voice warmed.  “This is Griffin Hale.  Griffin is one of our
stockholders, though we rarely see him at meetings.  I was just trying to find
out what brings him here.”  He turned back to Griffin.  “I hope you can come to
the wedding.”  He turned back to Margaret.  His overly effusive introduction
made it clear he expected there to be no problem adding a guest.  For her part,
Margaret took it graciously.
    “Of course
you are welcome Mr. Hale we’ll see if we can’t get your name down for another
seat at the reception as well.”
    “We should
be able to make room at our table.”  Stephen went on blithely.  Clearly not
caring who in the bridal party would be losing their spot at the table.  Becca
caught Rachelle’s smirk coming her way and wondered if she would end up sitting
at the kids table.
    “Don’t
bother on my account, as I was just about to explain to Stephen I have rather
pressing business of my own and will be unable to make the meal.  I would like
to offer my congratulations on your wedding.”  Griffin took her hand, kissing
the back of it.  “Stephen is a very lucky man.”
    Becca rolled
her eyes.
    Maggie
blushed.  “Thank you.”
    “Are you
sure you can’t join us?”  Stephen interjected, before his big fish could
escape.
    “Thank you,
but no, I might stop by briefly to collect my fiancé.  Actually if you can
spare her for a moment now we can iron out the details before she disappears
for the day.  There are a few things I forgot to discuss with her before we
parted this morning.”  Griffin suddenly turned and looked right at Becca.  “Can
you spare me a moment love?”
    Becca who
had been watching the polite but inane byplay with an inner grimace suddenly
found herself the focus of all eyes.  She cleared her throat, aware that the
expressions around her showed a wide range of shock, and on a few faces, a new calculation.
    She sighed
inwardly.  On one hand he had, with one line, raised her status astronomically,
if the looks passing around were any indication.  No kids table for her.  On
the other hand, he had just announced to the world that they were engaged,
without discussing it with her first, and after having known each other one
day.  He was beyond presumptuous.
    “Actually, dear ,
I was just about to head for the changing room with Maggie.  Today should be
all about the bride, after all, and I’ve already missed so much.  But I’m sure
I’ll see you after the wedding .”  She smiled a big fake smile right into
his glittering eyes.  “Sweetie.”  Then she turned her back and took Maggie’s
arm.  She was looking at Rebecca like they had never met before.
    They were almost
to the doors when Maggie found her voice.  “Do you know who that is?”  Then she
laughed.  “Of course you do, you’re engaged.”  Then her voice hit a new
octave.  “You’re engaged to Griffin Hale?  And you didn’t tell me?”
    “I’m not
engaged.”  She whispered.  “He just thinks we are.”  She felt a tingle at the
back of her neck.  Hunted, she was hunted.  “Can we move a little faster here?”
    “What do you
mean he just thinks you are?  Tell me you are not playing hard to get with
Griffin Hale.  Do you know who that
