responded.
They shook hands and embraced. Afterward, Sam looked into the jungle and took a deep breath before the two returned to the living room.
âWell Gerald, welcome to the organization. You âbout to witness more money than you ever seen in your life,â Sam told him.
âYeah, I know,â Gerald replied, âand believe me, I appreciate it.â He extended his hand for a shake. Sam left him hanging.
âI know your ass does. Now, you ready to roll? âCause as of right now, your ass is on the clock.â
They laughed.
âYeah, letâs go.â
Ten minutes later, as Gerald and Sam rode up Martin Luther King Jr. Avenue in Samâs Mercedes. Sam turned down the music on his radio.
âSo, how do you feel about Mike?â he asked Gerald, taking a quick side-glance at him.
âI got a lot of respect and love for Mike. For real, Sam, Mike doesnât know it, but I look up to him in a father-son type of way.â
âYeah, I can see that. So what you plan on doing with a funky-ass million dollars when you quit?â Sam asked.
âI plan to get a few soul food restaurants out here. Then chill and lay back.â
âOh, yeah? You got a girl? Any kids?â
âNah. All I got is Mike and my man Carlos down Lorton.â
âDamn, slim, and you mean to tell me you wanna quit and give up all this money youâre gonna be making?â
âShit, you know this donât last a lifetime.â
âYeah, I know, but donât you want more than one milâ?â
âSam, I ainât ever had a milâ. To me, thatâs filthy rich,â Gerald replied with a chuckle.
âNah, young nigga, two hundred milâ is filthy rich.â
âI agree with that. So what are you getting at?â
âLook, Mike is gonna quit. Thereâs no doubt about that. But me, Iâm still gonna be moving and making a lot of money. Iâm a take over Southeast, and I need a good, young nigga like you in my corner.â
âI dunno âbout thatââ Before Gerald could finish his sentence, Sam cut him off.
âFuck what Mike says!â Sam shouted, instantly irritated. He slammed his foot down on the brake, almost stopping the car in mid traffic. âIâm talking about getting rich. Mikeâs talking âbout living happily ever after with his wife and kid.â
At that moment, Gerald knew he could no longer share his true thoughts with Sam. Gerald saw deception in Samâs eyes the same way he saw it in Donnie Gâs eyes down Lorton. He knew Sam wanted to take Michaelâs place, but he didnât know just how badly Sam wanted to be Mike, or the things he was willing to do to be placed in that position.

âNothing. Iâm just standing out here on the balcony,â he replied.
âDamn, Mike, you stay out there. You ainât planning on jumping one day, are you?â
âCome on. You know Iâll never leave the two of you. I donât care what Iâm facing, and anyway, only suckers take their own lives.â
âBaby, Iâm just playinâ.â
âI know. So are you ready for tonight?â
âYeah, Iâm ready, baby. Did you get the tickets?â
âYeah, I got two seats in the front row. A nigga had to pay extra for that.â
âI bet you did pay extra. I better not see you lusting over Patti LaBelle either.â
âBaby, the only woman I got eyes for is you.â
âYou better. Well, Iâm âbout to go pick up Malik from aftercare and take him over to Lindaâs.â
âIs Linda gonna be home to watch him?â
âYeah, baby. Why you say that?â
âCome on, Connie, we both know Lindaâs a top-flight whore.â
