swan out of the office.â
âHardly swanningâalthough we did see some black ones after I met Candace at the doctorâs office for Jennie to be checked out.â
âYou took her back to the doctor? Is anything wrong?â Alison asked at once, glancing to Candace for a reply.
âNo, Jennieâs fine,â said Candace soothingly. âShe was restless last night, running a bit of a temperature, so I wanted to make sure there was no resurgence of the infection.â
âYouâre so good to her.â
âThank you.â She smiled at the other woman. âIâll take Jennie upstairs so you two can talk.â
âNot so fast.â Nick moved to obstruct her. âIâm not letting you go anywhere until weâve finished our discussion.â
What he meant was Iâm not letting you out of my sight, Candace thought rebelliously.
His sister mustâve thought the same thing. âNick, youâre being rudeâand youâre frightening Candace.â
Ignoring his sisterâs interjection, he gave her a mean stare. âSheâs not frightened enough.â
âNick!â
Even as Alison objected, Candaceâs heart sped up. She hugged Jennie tightly. âIâm not going to back down on the truth. You donât scare me.â
Alison glanced from Candace to her brother. âWhat truth? Anyone care to fill me in about whatâs going on?â
âCandace claims sheâs Jennieâs mother.â
Nickâs dismissive tone set Candaceâs teeth on edge. She still couldnât swallow that he hadnât known. âClaims? You know Iâm Jennieâs mother! You contracted me to donate the eggsand share my womb so you and Jilly could have the child she so desperately wanted.â
âContracted?â Nick gave a snort. âWhy would I want to do that?â
Candace gave him a cold stare over the babyâs head. âBecause you and Jilly were unable to have your own child.â
He stared. His features tightened. âIVF worked successfully for Jilly and me.â
Jennie shifted restlessly in her arms and Candace unsuccessfully ducked her head sideways as Jennie grabbed a handful of her hair. When sheâd extracted the strands from Jennieâs hands she said, âBe honest. Jilly told me all about the struggles you were havingâthat IVF wasnât working. Thatâs why the two of you decided to look for an egg donor, someone who could carry the baby for her. Which, of course, is where I came in.â
Now both Nick and Alison were staring at her as if sheâd grown two heads.
âWhat?â asked Candace. âWhy are you looking at me like that?â
âItâs true that the IVF didnât work in the initial attempts.â Nick appeared to be picking his words with care. âBut then Jilly tried a new procedure at an overseas clinic.â
âWhat my brother is trying to say,â cut in Alison, âis that Jilly was pregnant.â With her arms she mimed a swollen belly. âVery pregnant. She gave birthâto Jennie.â
Candace gaped at them both.
A vision of Jilly clad in black leggings and a belted long cardigan floated through her mind. Jilly had been reed slim when sheâd excitedly assisted the midwife at Jennieâs home birth in the cottage, and bore absolutely no resemblance to the rounded belly Alison had mimed.
Hitching Jennie higher against her shoulder, Candace said slowly, âThatâs not possible, because Jilly was never pregnant.â
Alison stared at Nick and raised an eyebrow.
âSheâs crazy.â Nick shrugged. âIâve been saying exactly the same thing as you, Alison, but she wonât let go of her delusion that Jilly was never pregnantâthat sheâs Jennieâs mother.â
Confusion clouded Candaceâs brain, making it feel wooly. Was it possible that Nick Valentine and his wife had pulled
