for you.â
âOK.â
She unclips my chart from the end of the bed, draws a pen out of her white-piped pocket, and begins to gnaw unsanitarily on the lid. âWhat are we going to do with you, eh?â
âI donât know. Listen, Sheilaâcan you make it so that I donât get any more visitors? I donâtâ¦I donât want to see anyone.â
She looks up at me, over the top of the clipboard.
âAre you going to tell me what this is all about then?â
âWhat?â
âWell, when one of my people gets into a lather about a simple little trip around the garden, I like to try to get a handle on why that might possibly be.â
She peers at me intently with her bottomless black irises.
âJustâ¦good old family baggage.â
âWas that your brother then?â
âKelvin? Ah, no, no. Heâs playing the servant to my sister.â
âThingsâ¦a little bit tricky back there?â
âLittle bit.â
She frowns and looks back down at my notes.
âThings with your sister?â
âLittle bit.â
She bats the clipboard flat against her chest. âTricky enough that you want to sever all ties?â
I close my eyes and sigh. âLook, I know what youâre getting at. But itâs for the best. Weâve said all weâve got to say to each other.â
âItâs not for me to judge, Ivo. Youâll know better than me, Iâm sure.â She slots the clipboard back in place, repockets the pen, and comes around to half sit at the end of the bed.
âLet me take you through what Iâm thinking,â she says. âWhat Iâm thinking is, here is a man, heâs not well, and heâs clearly not happy. Now, itâs none of my business, but Iâm here for a reason. If you donât want to see anyone, thatâs up to you. Whatever you want, thatâs what I do.â
âRight.â
âBut youâve got to know, if you refuse all visitors, that means something to us. That sends us a message. Dr. Sood will come in here in the morning, and he and I will have a chat about all the cases, and heâll look at your notes, and heâll say, Oh, refused all visitors , and heâll draw certain conclusions from that.â
âYeah, I know.â
âItâs just my job to let you know that. I mean, there are a lot of things we offer, to help people out when theyâre having dark thoughts. I can arrange one of our counselors to come along and have a chat at any time.â
âNo. No thanks.â
âJust so long as you know Iâm here to help. Iâm here to help you get what you need.â
âIt is. Itâs what I want.â
She smiles at me and holds up her hands. âOK,â she says. âOK. Iâll see what I can do. Just do me a favor: donât close yourself off completely. Any fool can be unhappy. Cutting yourself off from absolutely everyone⦠Well, itâs very tempting, I know, but sometimes itâs not for the best. Sometimes youâve got to try a little bit, so you can feel better.â
I frown at the wall fractionally. It sounds like the sort of thing youâd say. I can hear you saying it.
âI donât want to see anyone,â I say in a measured tone.
âOK, lovey. Iâll put the word in on reception.â
I look up at her and nod. âThank you.â
âYour wish is my command.â She smiles, standing and brushing imagined crumbs from her trousers. âBut listen, Ivo. You can be as grumpy as you like with me; Iâll keep on coming back. Justâ¦just donât leave anything unsaid to the people who matter. It only takes a few words to change your world.â

Itâs quieter in here today. Somethingâs not quite rightâpeopleâs rhythms are different. Sheilaâs not dropped in as many times, and when she has, sheâs been giving off different signals.
