jumps to her feet. âYeah, catch up to Eddie. We all know you have a crush on him!â
Lottieâs hand flies up to her mouth.
âDo not!â I holler.
âDo too!â
I yell louder. âDo not!â
Melissa waves her hand like sheâs shooing away a mosquito. âGo on, now. Run to your loverboy.â She starts laughing.
âDonât go, Violet, sheâs just teasing,â Lottie says.
I look from Lottie to Melissa. I canât stand the smirk on Melissaâs face. âIâm leaving.â
I stomp down the stairs, smashing the good feelings I had with every step. I reach the bottom and it only takes a second to realize I must turn left to my house instead of right to where Eddie went.
I donât have a crush on him.

âMomma, what made you fall in love with my daddy?â Iâve come for lunch on an especially good dayâMommaâs made chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting, special order, but there were two extras. Iâm almost finished with mine.
Momma sets her fork down. Sheâs eating her cupcake with a fork soâs not to disturb her lipstick. She smiles. âNow why are you asking me that?â
I make the exact opposite of a smile. Some people think thatâs a frown, but theyâre wrong. The exact opposite of a smile is an I-donât-care face, like I make now. âJust wondered.â I take a bite out of my cupcake.
It works, âcause she looks past me and I can tell sheâs looking through the memories in her head. Her face gets all soft and, for a moment, she looks younger. âIâd seen your daddy around church and in school. All us girls knew who he wasââ
âHow? Was he class president or something important?â
Momma laughs softly. âNo, he was never president or anything like that. He justâit was just the way he was.â
Well, this is no help at all. âIf he wasnât anything important, howâd everyone know who he was?â
âYour daddy played guitar in church. I guess thatâs how the other boys knew who he was. And us girls, tooâhe looked just like Elvis Presley up on that platform. He was so good looking, and bashful too. That made us like him even more.â
I wrinkle my nose and pull my head back. âYou mean you had a crush on him?â
âI think everyone had a crush on your father. Me and my best friend joined the choir just to be near him.â
I nearly fall off my chair hearing that. âYou started singing soâs you could be near a boy?â
Momma laughs. âOh, yes! I just wanted to be near him, anything just to be with him. I couldnât believe it when the pastor put us up front to sing together.â Mommaâs eyes are wet with sad-happy tears. âHe said we had perfect harmony.â
âSo did everyone start teasing you âbout you and daddy?â
âActually,â Momma says, âI think they were a little jealous.â Mommaâs face begins to focus and I can almost see the memory evaporating like a cloud. âWhy?â she asks. âAre people teasing you âbout someone?â
I quickly put on the I-donât-care face, but itâs too late. I can tell by the way she waits on my answer sheâs seen my real face.
âKind of,â I say. I shrug. I donât want this to be a big deal. âTheyâre teasing me about Eddie. Melissa thinks heâs cute.â
âHe is a nice-looking boy.â
I rise halfway out of my seat. âI donât have a crush on him!â
Momma looks startled. âI didnât say you did.â
âYeah, but you said heâs a nice-looking boy.â
âI didnât mean anything by it.â
âYes, you did,â I say and scoot my chair back. âYou think I have a crush on him just like they do.â
Momma looks confused. âVioletââ
âWell, youâre wrong.â I slam
