door. She came into the room with an orange backpack slung over one shoulder. The gun in his hand didnât seem to frighten her at all.
âDid you get some sleep?â she asked, kissing his cheek and crossing the room to toss the backpack onto a love seat.
âYeah, look,â he said, scratching his head. âIâm not exactly who you thinkââ
âOf course youâre not,â she interrupted. âIf you were, I wouldnât have just canceled a wedding that was supposed to take place ten days from now.â
He set the pistol down on the table. âLena, Iâm not sureââ
âYou donât need to be. Iâm sure.â
âBut Iâm not lookinâ toââ
âNeither am I,â she said with a laugh. âYou still love your wife. Thatâs obvious. What I want is adventure. Iâd almost forgotten what that was, being with Sabastian. You reminded me last night. Iâm not really sure what I was thinking when I agreed to marry him.â
He grabbed his pants and stepped into them. âFirst of all, I canât give you the kind of adventure youâre looking for. I donât have that kind of money.â
âIâve got my own money, Conner.â
â Connerâs not my even my name,â he said with a sigh.
She took his pack of cigarettes from the nightstand. âThen what is it?â
âIâm sorry,â he said. âI canât tell you. I canât even tell you what Iâm doing in Liechtenstein.â
She lit the cigarette with a chuckle, dropping the lighter onto the nightstand. âAnd you say you canât give me adventure.â
âLook, this isnât a game.â
âAll life is a game.â
He shook his head, regretting his weakness the night before. âPeople get killed in the games I play.â
She sat down on the bed. âPeople get killed jumping out of airplanesâyet thatâs my favorite sport.â She gestured at the gun. âAnd I assume thatâs yours?â
He picked up his shirt from the floor. âWhereâs Sabastian?â
âHeaded for the airport.â
âHeâs pissed? Heartbroken?â
She looked thoughtful for a moment. âIâd say heâs offended . Men like Sabastian donât get their hearts broken. Heâll have another woman like me by the end of the weekâmaybe not one as wealthy.â
âLast night you said Iâd make an enemy.â
âAnd you haveâbut I gave you fair warning in that regard. Do you want to spend more time with me or not? Because now Iâm beginning to get offended.â
He grinned. âWell, we wouldnât want that.â
They agreed to meet in the lounge after Gil had showered and made some calls. In the meantime, Lena would schedule a flight for the two of them to Switzerland.
Gil got Pope on the phone and told him the truth about what had happened between him and Lena
âAll right,â Pope said. âThese things happen. You can finish the job in Switzerland. Iâll figure out a way for it to look like a Mossad hit. Blickensderfer is on their list, too.â The Mossad was Israelâs version of the CIA.
âBob, no. Iâve blown this op. I canât sleep with a guyâs girl and then kill him.â
There was a long silence at the other end of the phone.
âYou there?â
âYeah,â Pope replied. âIâm trying to understand what you just said. Youâre telling me you canât kill a man if youâve slept with his woman. What does one have to do with the other?â
âI guess itâs personal now.â Gil didnât know how else to explain it.
âIâve got news for you,â Pope replied somewhat coldly. âIf Blickensderfer ever finds out who you are, this will become a great deal more personal.â
âIâve blown this one, Bob. Iâm sorry. It wonât
