not to see. Then he steps out of the hot tub and stalks off to the house. He can be mad all he wants, but if he thinks Iâm going to sneak away with him with our friends right outside, heâs crazy.
To Alex I say, âYour skinâs getting red.â
Alex groans. âThe plight of the fair-skinned Irish. Thatâs why I have to marry you, Lil, so I can stop this vicious cycle. Our kids would be so good-looking.â
Uncomfortably, I giggle. âAs long as they get my fashion sense,â I say, stretching out my legs so my toes float above the water. âAnd my dance skills. You have no rhythm whatsoever, Lindy.â
Later, when weâre all out of the hot tub and itâs time to go home, Alex offers to drive me to school for my car. Reeveâs putting his sweater back on, but I know heâs listening to every word. I say, âNo, thatâs okay. Ash and I have more work to get done tonight.â
Alex looks disappointed, but he leaves, and so do Reeve and Derek. Reeve doesnât even look at me when he goes.
Upstairs in Ashâs room, I go over to her bed to open up my computer, and I look out her window. Reeveâs truck is still here. Heâs waiting for me. Reeve needs to understand that he and I arenât happening, not ever.
Quickly I look down at my phone and say, âUh-oh, my momâs texting me. She wants me home.â
Ashlin looks up from her computer. Sheâs in the process of buying a new cashmere sweater. âJust give me two secs, and Iâll drive you back to your car.â
âNo, thatâs okay. The guys havenât left yet. Iâll get one of them to take me.â I grab my bag and my computer and give Ash a hug, and then Iâm running down the stairs and out the front door.
I climb into Reeveâs truck, and for a moment weâre both silent. He has a scowl on his face. âWhatâs the matter with you tonight?â I ask.
He fumes. âI wanted to see you, I wanted to have fun, and I walk in on you and Alex cozy in the hot tub, and you wonât even tell me what you were talking about.â He makes an annoyed face, which gets me so mad.
âWe were talking about Rennie!â I burst out. âAnd, Reeve, you never want to talk about her!â
Reeve turns white. âWhat good does it do to bring up the past? Sheâs dead. Talking about it isnât going to bring her back. This thing between you and me is separate from that.â
âNo, it isnât. Weâre the reason Rennie died, and itâs eating me up inside. She never would have been driving around that night if it werenât for us. Sheâd have been at her party, where she belongedââ
âStop!â Reeve shouts. I jump. Heâs breathing hard. âI donât want to do this right now, okay? I canât. So justâstop. Donât say anything else. Please.â
âOkay.â Heâs shaking. I smooth my hand over his back until his breathing slows down. âItâs okay.â
Before I can say another word, heâs got me pushed up against the window and heâs kissing me. And Iâm kissing him back.

When we get to the school parking lot an hour later, I pull down the visor mirror and try to fix my hair. Itâs a mess.
Watching me, he says, âYouâre the only thing thatâs keeping me going.â
My hand stills.
âI canât not see you,â he says.
I donât look at him, I canât. âIf weâre going to do this, no one can know. It canât be like what happened tonight. We need to be careful.â
Quickly he says, âOkay. Iâll do whatever you want. However you want to do it. I feel like I canât breathe when Iâm not with you, Cho.â
And then Iâm in his arms, and weâre kissing again. Just like before.
