Ollie.â
The girls were sitting on a grassy bank nearby.
âJust look at that lot,â laughed Charlotte. âWhat a bunch of idiots!â
âSure are,â Leela agreed. âIâm almost glad they wonât let us join in.â
âYou sound as if you want to,â Charlotte said.
âNo way,â said Leela.
Then the ball came rolling towards them.
âBoot it back, Charlie,â shouted Harry.
But Leela pounced on the ball and dribbled it to the goal.
âCome on, just give it back,â Harry demanded, but Leela kept on running, with the ball under control.
Brad tried to tackle her, but Leela skipped past him.
Another member of the Fives squad, Ravi, was in goal, standing between the bags being used as posts.
âCome on, then,â Ravi shouted to her. âBet you canât beat me from there.â
Leelaâs shot swerved past him and went between the bags.
âGoal!â she cried, and did a perfect cartwheel and forward roll. Leela was a member of the school gym club.
Harry pulled a face. âHuh! You ought to be on telly,â he grunted.
âI will be one day,â she told him with a grin. âScoring at Wembley.â
âNo chance!â said Harry.
Ravi called across the field. âHey! Charlie! You want to play in goal?â
Harry gave him a dirty look. âI told you. No girls.â
âWhy not?â Ravi argued. âSheâs the best keeper weâve got.â
âSheâs the only keeper weâve got,â Harry said. âYouâre no good.â
âIâm better than you,â Ravi snapped.
âYou wish,â said Harry.
âYeah? Come on, then. Prove it!â Ravi yelled.
Leela liked seeing somebody else standing up to Harry.
âYes, letâs see how good you are in goal, Harry,â she said. âIf you dare.â
Harry couldnât back down now.
âOK, then, I donât mind going in goal for a bit,â he said. âBut you two still canât play.â
âThatâs all right,â Leela smiled. âWeâll just watch.â
The two girls stood right behind the goal, knowing that would annoy Harry and might help to put him off.
âClear off!â he told them.
âNo,â said Charlotte.
âCharlie wants to watch you in goal.â Leela grinned. âShe thinks youâre cute.â
Charlotte giggled. Harry glared at both of them.
âKeep your eyes on the game, not Charlie,â Leela told Harry.
âMark your man,â Harry shouted at his defenders. âRavi â you take Ollie. Brad, back him up.â
Oliver was very hard to mark. He seemed to drift into spaces that no other players had noticed.
He found a space now. As the ball floated onto the goalmouth, Ollie timed his run perfectly. He reached the ball before Harry, kicking it past him and between the bags.
âOops!â giggled Charlotte. âYou missed that one, Harry.â
âA bit slow off your line there,â mocked Leela.
âLike to see you do any better,â Harry snarled as he tramped past to collect the ball.
âCharlie would have saved it,â Leela said.
Harry booted the ball away as hard as he could.
Harry was soon called into action once more. This time he made a fine save, diving onto the ball and stopping it.
âGood stop,â said Charlotte.
But another goal soon wiped the smile off Harryâs face. He got a hand to the ball, but he failed to stop it. The ball hit one of the bags and went in.
Harry lay on the grass, furious.
âBad luck,â said Charlotte.
Leela did not say anything. She didnât need to. Ravi, however, couldnât resist.
âDo you still think youâre better than me in goal?â he grinned. âOr Charlie?â
Harry jumped up and lashed out with his fists, taking Ravi by surprise. Then Ravi knocked Harry down onto the ground.
âFight!
