pressed between the floor and the bottom of the bed.
“That was so close,” he whispered.
    I nodded my head.
“That would have been a tough one to explain...” I responded, chuckling softly. “I don’t know what our excuse would have been.”
Steven smiled and then crawled out from underneath the bed.
“You know, one of these days, we should really consider telling her about us,” he said, as he sat next to me. “It would have probably made this situation a little less panic stricken if she had known.”
I laughed and put my arm around his waist, pulling him next to me.
“Yeah, but what fun would that have been?” I asked, as I leaned in, giving him a kiss on the cheek.
Steven nodded his head and then shrugged his shoulders.
“I suppose that’s a good point,” he said.
Then he paused for a moment, taking a deep breath to calm himself down.
“Now, where were we?” he asked, as he turned toward me once again.
    I hit his shoulder playfully.
“Steven!” I said. “We have to be good now. My mom is awake and she could walk by the door at any moment.”
Steven playfully pouted out his lower lip, and then leaned in to kiss me on the cheek.
“I guess you’re right,” he said. “Well...I’ll see you in the morning then?”
I nodded my head and smiled, then placed my hand on the back of his head, pulling him in for a deep kiss on the lips. Then I slowly pulled away, looking him in the eyes.
“Sounds good,” I said. “Don’t let my mom catch you on the way to your bedroom.”
Butterflies flew inside of me as I looked at him. I wished so badly that we could have finished having sex, but more than that, I wished that he could have spent the night in the same bed as me, holding me close and keeping me safe. I sighed, as I looked him over, knowing that something was going to have to change if I ever wanted to have that kind of relationship with him. Eventually, our parents needed to know what was going on.
“Goodnight,” Steven whispered, before standing up from the bed and tiptoeing across the room.
He quietly opened the door and then poked his head out, making sure the coast was clear of my mother. Then he stepped out, closing the door behind him and making his way back to his room.
I rolled over and closed my eyes, slowly drifting off to sleep. My dreams were filled with a life with Steven where our love didn’t have to be kept a secret.

Chapter 11
    ––––––––
T he next morning at work, all that I could think about was Steven. My job as an office assistant kept me pretty busy, but it wasn’t enough to keep me distracted from the thoughts of him. He made me smile inside and every time he crossed my mind, I felt butterflies in my stomach. It was the most legitimate crush I had ever had in my life and I wondered at what point I would be able to call it love.
As I sat at my desk I began to ponder where things were headed with Steven and I. How long could we live a lie? Forever? I’d be willing to live a lie forever if that’s what it took, but I knew that it wouldn’t make for the healthiest of relationships. But still, a part of me began to wonder if a relationship that started as a secret had to remain a secret, in order to keep from falling apart. I worried that if people knew about Steven and I, then it would completely change the dynamic between us.
I sighed, as I fumbled through my long list of work emails, my mind focused on everything else besides work. Suddenly, I felt my cell phone vibrate in the front pocket of my work slacks, shaking me from my daydreaming.
I pulled it out and looked at the screen, where I saw a text from my mom. It read: “ Hey, honey. Do you want to get lunch in a few minutes? It’s on me. I’m craving sushi.”
A smile crossed my face and my eyes lit up. I loved sushi and there was no way that I could turn down an offer like that. So I quickly responded with an excited text that read, “ Yes! I’ll see you there. I’ll leave
