âYou need to raise your hand, A.J.,â said Mr. Cooper.
Then Miss Brown jumped up so she was on her feet like a normal person.
âYouâre probably wondering why I was walking on my hands,â she said. â Anybody can walkon their feet. Itâs more creative to walk on your hands.â
âMiss Brown is an expert on creativity,â said Mr. Klutz. âSheâs going to be your coach for the Brain Games.â
âThe Brain Games are a competition where you use your brains,â said Miss Brown. âIt involves creative projects blah blah blah think differently blah blah blah create and explore blah blah blah . . .â
What a snoozefest. I had no idea what she was talking about.
âWhen I say âup,â I want you to think âdown,ââ said Miss Brown. âWhen I say âin,â I want you to think âout.ââ
âThis isnât going to be one of thoseboring educational activities, is it?â asked Mr. Cooper.
Ewww , Mr. Cooper said the E word!
âOh no, the Brain Games are going to be fun !â said Miss Brown. âThe kids are going to create their own vehicle, and theyâre going to build a bridge, too. Doesnât that sound like fun?â
âYes!â shouted all the girls.
âNo!â shouted all the boys.
âThe Brain Games are sponsored by the Jiggly gelatin company,â said Miss Brown. âIâm sure youâve all tasted Jiggly at home.â
âIt jiggles, so you know itâs good,â added Mr. Klutz.
Iâve tasted Jiggly gelatin. It looks like Jell-O, but it tastes horrible. My mothergave Jiggly to me one time when I was sick. It was worse than the medicine.
âAnd hereâs the big news,â said Mr. Klutz. âYour class is going to compete against another school to see which third grade will be the Brain Games champion of our town.â
âWhich school?â we all asked.
âDirk School,â said Mr. Klutz.
WHAT?! No! Not Dirk School! Dirk School is on the other side of town. Thatâs where the really smart kids go. We call it Dork School.
I didnât like the whole idea of the Brain Games. I guess I was making a mean face.
âWhatâs the matter, A.J.?â asked Mr. Cooper.
âThe Brain Games sound like a way to trick dumb kids into being smart,â I said.
âThereâs no way we can beat those Dirk jerks anyway,â said Ryan.
âYeah, theyâre way too smart,â said Michael.
âYou kids are smart, too,â said Mr. Klutz, âand I think you can win. Oh, by the way, there will be a prize for the school thatwins the Brain Games.â
âA prize?â asked Andrea.
âA prize?â asked Emily, a big crybaby who says everything Andrea says.
âA prize?â asked Alexia.
In case you were wondering, everybody was saying âa prize?â
âThe school that wins the Brain Games,â said Mr. Klutz, âwill get a trip to PizzaWorld Water Park!â
âWOW!â we all said, which is âMOMâ upside down.
PizzaWorld is the coolest water park in the history of water parks. You get to go down a water slide on a giant slice of pizza. They have a tomato sauce log flume. The best ride is Cheese Mountain, a roller coasteron a mountain made of cheese. And in the snack bar you get all the pizza you can eat.
âWe need to choose a team captain,â said Miss Brown. âAre any of you in the gifted and talented program?â
Andreaâs hand shot up in the air.
âArenât you in the G and T program, too, A.J.?â asked Mr. Cooper.
I slinked down in my seat. I never wanted to be in the gifted and talented program. Thatâs for dorks like Andrea. But Ms. Coco, our gifted and talented teacher, forced me into it.
âOkay, A.J. and Andrea will be the cocaptains of your Brain Games team,â said Mr. Cooper.
âOoooo!â Ryan said.
