âPeople werenât friendly at school, either,â she said. âIs there something wrong with me?â
âGod, no!â
Aiden didnât say anything else for a while, but just when she thought he had nothing to add to the topic, he spoke. âYouâre, like, so beautiful and cool and sure of yourself, I think the kids at school were frightened of you.â
âFrightened of me?â Vivian laughed with surprise. These people didnât have enough sense to know what to be frightened of. She could show them frightening.
âWell, you know,â Aiden continued. âAfraid that maybe you wouldnât tolerate lesser mortals, so why bother.â
They pulled up in front of her house. âSo, are you afraid of me?â she asked, trying to keep the amusement from her voice.
âTerrified,â he said as he reached for her.
Vivian stopped him with a gentle touch. âWhy werenât you like the others? Why didnât you freeze me out when I talked to you the first time?â
He studied her while he thought. âWell, apart from the fact that youâre the most beautiful girl Iâve ever seen, curiosity, I suppose.â
âCuriosity?â
He looked down into his lap as if shy of telling her. âUntil you drew that pentagram in my palm, then I knew we could be friends. That you might beâ¦â He bit his lip and flung his head back, eyes closed. âOh, man. This sounds dumb.â
He was so endearing. She leaned over and touched the tip of her tongue to his cheek. âWhat does?â
âThat you could be my soul mate.â He said it fast, looking everywhere but at her. âThat I could bare everything to you and you would understand.â
Vivian was stunned. He was exposing his belly to her. A rush of warmth filled her. âSweet puppy,â she said. âBare everything and you would certainly have my undivided attention.â Her tongue touched his ear.
âYouâre making fun,â he said, his anxious eyes finally meeting hers.
She sat up straight. âNo, Iâm not. Iâm honored,â she answered seriously. She didnât want to hurt his feelings.
He relaxed and the smile came back to his eyes. âSee you tomorrow?â he asked.
âYeah.â
Was she Aidenâs soul mate? Vivian wondered up in her room. Wouldnât she know if she were? Maybe if she made him the mate of her flesh first, then she would know.

They were always at parties, or at the movies, or hanging out at someoneâs house, always in the midst of Aidenâs friends, the Amoeba. Even when they were alone together he was very careful in how far he went, as if he was afraid to scare her off. This made her smile.
Soon, baby, Iâll let you know how scared Iâm not,
she thought.
Then one evening, when he took her home, Aiden had bad news. âI have to go on vacation with my parents.â He flushed with embarrassment as he told her. âI thought I could get out of it,â he said. âIâm too old to get dragged to the beach with Mommy and Daddy. But they went on and on, you know, about how Iâll be in college soon and itâs our last chance to have a family vacation together, blah, blah, blah.â He smiled anxiously at her. âIâll miss you.â
âAnd my birthday,â Vivian said sulkily, then immediately felt bad because he looked so stricken. She kissed his cheek, letting her lips linger there as she whispered a kind of apology. âNever mind, bring me back a shell or something.â She could feel his skin grow hot as he responded to the warm flutter of her breath.
âIâll be back just in time for the Fourth of July,â he promised, slipping his arms around her. âWeâll go see the fireworks at the park. I bet someoneâs having a party.â Someone was always having a party.

Apparently there wasnât to be a birthday fuss this
