feelingsâ kind of thing?â
âCheaters never win,â Toni answered. âBut I suppose Justine cheated in changing her routine to copy ours.â
âWe all know Justineâs batty anyway,â Liberty quipped. âI say we forget it ever happened.â
âI say you go out there and win us first place,â Toni insisted. âThen Iâll decide how to handle your fibbing to the Feet.â
House of Cards
As City Feet strutted off the stage, Liberty raised her hand to high-five them.
âNice,â she said. âWhat do you call that routineââFour Strikes Youâre Outâ?â
âI call it a winner,â Regan replied. âEspecially when you go out there and do your pathetic best to copy it.â
âOh, you mean the baseball thing?â Rochelle asked. âYeah, itâs not happening.â
Mandyâs mouth hung open. âHuh? Gracie said you were doing a dance with baseball bats!â
âYou shouldnât believe everything you hear,â Bria pointed out.
âI told you we should have put in chopped liver and penguins,â Gracie said, pouting. âYou guys need to trust me more!â
Liberty pushed Regan aside. âOut of the way,â she said. âLet us show you how itâs done.â
The Divas took their places on the three-tiered platform Toni had built. They waited patiently for the host to announce them: âPerforming a jazz number to âLuck Be a Lady,â please welcome, Dance Divas in âHouse of Cardsâ!â
As they had rehearsed, Rochelle ducked down to let Gracie leapfrog high over her head. Gracieâs shoes and hat were trimmed in jingly bells that tinkled as she flipped and flitted around the stage. Each girl brought her own character and style to her role: Anyaâs ace was a delicate ballerina

; Rochelleâs jack was a cool and confident hip-hop dancerbreak dancing on the floor; Briaâs ten of diamonds did a sparkling tap time step; and Liberty and Scarlett were a lyrical king and queen in all their royal splendor. Libertyâs crown twinkled under the stage lights as she pranced around in a white vinyl catsuit with green and purple piping. They did an impressive fifteen

turns in perfect sync before Liberty hit a switch on her waistband to reveal a âhiddenâ element of her costume: all the seams lit up and flashed in time to the music!
The audience oohed and aahed, especially when Gracie stood on Rockâs shoulders and jumped onto a trampoline. When she bounced back up in the air, she did a forward somersault. At the end of the number, all the girls stood in a line and fell backward, like a house of cards toppling over. There was thunderous applause and whistling; one judge gave them two enthusiastic thumbs-up.
As they dashed off the stage, Toni grabbed Liberty by the elbow. âWhat happened todoing your costume without any help?â she asked. âHow many electricians did it take to rig up those flashing lights?â
âNone,â Liberty insisted. âIt was actually an old Halloween costume that I found at my next-door neighborâs yard sale.â She showed Toni the label on the back: it read BUZZ LIGHTYEAR.
âSo you recycled it?â Toni asked her.
âYup, and I glued all the gems on the crown myself,â she said, taking off her headpiece. âScoutâs honor!â
âYouâre not a Girl Scout,â Rochelle pointed out.
âOkay, then Divaâs honor. I really did it all myself. My mom was way too busy choreographing Pitbull, and I needed something to do in the hotel all day.â
Toni nodded. âThen you did a great job, which I hope teaches you a lessonâyou donât need to rely on your momâs help or connections.â
Liberty smiled. It felt good to do something by herself for once. âWho knew?â
âI did,â Toni replied with a
