from—or how she knew my name.
    Wait a minute…
I moved nearer and studied Leah’s profile. The familiarity
strengthened. I folded my arms across my ribs and took several more steps, to
within a few feet of her.
She finally faced me and set her hands on her curvy hips. I
caught a glimpse of a deep shadow of cleavage in the gap of her button-up
blouse. A black strap peeped from under her blazer jacket, a weapon tucked into
its holster.
“Stay back.” Her eyes flickered with authority yet they also
held a glimmer of envy. The expression mirrored how I felt.
I scrutinized the fit body, her height, pretty oval face and
long thick hair.
But what was it that seemed out of place? Yes. That was it.
The hair. But why? Why did she look familiar yet not familiar?
Aha. It came to me in a flash. Brunette, not blonde.
Some sort of skimpy uniform, not a cop with a different kind
of strap-on—a gun.
Then that tip-of-the-tongue syndrome spit out the truth.
    That was it.
“Cindy? Are you Cindy—or was it Sandy?—the bartender from Puss
’N Tush? When Tito Faggini owned the place, got busted and they shut the club
down?”
This was the woman who’d burst into the party room with the
bouncers and my then fiancé Rob. He’d caught me and Frank in a…compromising
position and hauled me out leaving “Cindy” behind with Frank.
“Great.” She rolled her eyes. “Just great. I love it when my
cover’s blown, especially by Mrs. Stripper Sherlock. And it was Cindy not
freakin’ Sandy, you moron.”
Cindy, Sandy, Leah. Didn’t matter. Screw them all.
I rubbed at my forehead. “Are you on your period or
something?”
    Frank chuckled.
“Screw you, Lyons,” Leah said, glaring at me instead of him.
I rewound this entire mess in my mind.
    Hmm.
So after I’d left with Rob that night at the club right
before it had been shut down by the feds, apparently this Cindy—or Leah,
now—and Frank had hooked up.
My fingernails dug into my palms. The mental image of these
two together so soon after Frank and I had almost completed his fantasy of
doing me anally had my temper boiling.
And according to Ned’s earlier comment about their affair,
they’d added Ned to the picture later.
“Yep, that’s her, Jaz.” Frank jerked his shirt from Ned’s
hold and shoved him away. “Undercover cop. Ned too. Work out of my precinct.”
To Leah, Frank added, “Of course your cover’s blown. You
didn’t exactly come busting in here in a black wig again like you wore at Puss
’N Tush back then.”
She ground her teeth together. “Shut up, Frank. And it
wasn’t ‘black’, it was brunette—really dark brown.”
    “Whatever.”
I set my hands on my hips and mirrored Leah’s stance. “So that ’ s how you knew my name? You’d been spying on me in that bartender getup? Spying
on the whole club as Cindy? And now you’re arresting Frank with no evidence?”
“I don’t owe you any explanations. But I suppose I could
show you some evidence we found at the club tonight.” She reached inside her
jacket, flipped open a black leather wallet-looking thing and flashed a badge
at Frank. “Found it on the floor by that ‘lewd’ cage you jacked off in front
of. Seems you have a negligent habit of letting your badge go missing in that
place.”
I had no idea what Leah meant about Frank’s negligence at Puss
’N Tush but the important thing at the moment was getting him out of this mess.
Leah yanked on the handcuffs. “Now let’s go, pal. Off to
jail.”
Frank glared at Ned and lifted his chin in the direction of
the couch. “I need my damn shoes. Over there in front of the rocker chair.”
Ned sauntered across the room, snatched up Frank’s work
boots and returned to where Leah had Frank in custody. Ned grabbed Frank by the
arm and hauled him out into the hallway.
I rushed to the door. “Frank. Baby, what should I do?”
“Head down to the police station, see if you and Gio can bail
me out. You might have
