desert.”
“Oh, lord! I am going to roll down
the hill tonight! I am drooling already!”
“Wow, Essie. I did not know you could
cook like that!”
Essie snorted and glowered at Billy.
He looked at Mackenzie, then at Chase who still had to utter a word since he
arrived. His mouth had tightened when she spoke about rolling down the hill.
Little Mack was not such a pushover after all!
“We still have to talk, Mackenzie.
Let’s go to my study.”
Mackenzie took another bite of her
pre-starter starter and chewed and swallowed before she speared a glance in his
direction.
“I was ready to talk at the beach
cottage ... darling. You’re the one that elected to rather spend the time having
phone sex with one of your … floozies.”
“Jealous, hotcakes?”
Mackenzie looked at him, her eyes
shimmering with heated passion and he drew a deep breath.
“Of your darling? Hardly, big boy. I
imagine there are hundreds of those lurking around every corner in the city. I
wonder … you are getting on in years … do you have your little blue pills on a
repeat script?”
Aiden tried to hide his laugh, but
Billy burst out laughing and even Chase’s lips twitched.
“Now, honey. Don’t be nasty. I still
have a lot of energy left for you.”
“Oh no, thank you very much. If I
needed any reminder about why sane, intelligent women stayed away from gigolos
like you, I got it listening to that sickening phone call. No, big boy, I can
safely say, been there, done that and moved on. Now I’ll even have proof! A
badge of honor, so to speak!”
Billy could not stop laughing and
clamped his stomach when Chase punched him.
“Stop laughing, you idiot! It’s not
that funny!”
Essie and her kitchen assistant
carried the starters over and placed them in front of each of them. She took
the empty plate from Mackenzie and shook her head when she breathed delightedly
at the flavor of the food. Aiden shook his head.
“I don’t know how you manage to stay
so thin, sis! I have never seen any girl eat as much as you.”
“Are you saying she’s always eaten
like this?”
“Always. She’s a very good cook too.
Ralph used to joke that he would have to get a second job once they’re married
… sorry sis!”
“Married? Does that mean they were
engaged?”
Chase addressed the question to
Aiden. He glanced at Mackenzie and nodded.
“Did they live together?”
Aiden shook his head. Mackenzie
glared at Chase then at Aiden, but she carried on eating.
“How long were they engaged?”
“About tw …”
“Oh for heaven’s sake! It is none of
your business, Paxton.”
“Of course it is.”
“No, it is not!”
“When did they break up?”
“If you answer one more question,
Aiden Lewis, I will sock you on the nose!”
“Jealous, Chase?” Billy asked with
raised eyebrows.
“Yes!”
Since Aiden mentioned the man the
evening before he has been questioning the tremor he felt in his stomach. He
knew he did not like to think of her with any other man. More so, that she
might have any feelings for another man. That is, another man but him! He
raised his eyebrows at her. He felt very possessive towards this woman and it
had nothing to do with the fact that she was carrying his baby.
Mackenzie nearly choked on the piece
of prawn she just put in her mouth. She coughed. Her sweet smile warned him
and he braced himself.
“You know, Babes, if I thought you
would even remember what I looked like if I disappeared for two months, that
would have been sweet. But we both know that would not be the case.”
“Ouch, Mack. That was harsh.”
Billy pretended concern for his nephew
with a hidden smile. Usually what she said was the truth … but Chase forget
her?
“Was it? I could count my lovers on
one hand and I would not use all my fingers. Do you even know how many you’ve
had, Babe?”
“Honey, it’s not remembering how many
I’ve had that
