dead. At least when youâre dead, you can be quiet and nobody minds. Uncle Marcus has a house in Newport, thatâs where they summer, and I got up very late at night, and put on my bathing suit and went swimming. Itâs a big ocean. I figured there was plenty of water to swallow me up.â
âDid you change your mind?â Nick asked.
âI got rescued,â Meg said. âThere was a couple on the beach and they saw me and swam out and rescued me. I was too tired to fight, too helpless. Afterward, they kept me in bed for a few days, and all kinds of doctors checked me over, and then Uncle Marcus decided I was his first defeat, and I went to live with Aunt Grace.â
âYou fool,â Nick said. âDidnât you know Iâd come?â
âDid you know about me?â Meg asked.
Nick took Meg by the hand and embraced her. Meg felt the warmth of his body against hers, and the past five years held no more pain.
âVery pretty,â Clark said. âBut you can see now sheâs damaged goods. Why donât you try your luck again with Isabelle Sinclair. Bag boys canât have half your charm.â
âThey have twice yours,â Nick said. âDaisy, thereâs so much we need to talk about. Thereâs so much I want to do for you.â
âYouâve done it already,â Meg replied. âYouâve loved me.â
âWait a second,â Clark said. âLots of people love you, Meg. They may not call you Daisy but they love you. And they know you, too, and have the same values you have. The only thing he values is a dollar bill.â
Nick turned to face Clark. âWho are you, anyway?â he asked. âYou keep showing up, like a recurring nightmare.â
âI am a nightmare,â Clark said. âIâm your conscience, Sebastian, if thatâs what your name really is. Iâm also Megâs protector, and donât you forget it.â
âItâs Clark something, isnât it,â Nick said.
Meg laughed. âHis name is Clark Bradford,â she said. âAnd heâs a friend of mine.â She paused for a moment. âHe really is,â she said.
Nick looked Clark over. âI didnât realize he was someone you cared about,â he said. âIâm sorry, Clark, if Iâve offended you in any way.â He stuck his hand out for Clark to shake.
Clark stared at Nick and moved away from him. âYouâve offended me in every conceivable way,â he declared. âIâd sooner die than shake your hand.â
âFair enough,â Nick said, putting his hand down. âBut if you change your mind, let me know. I want to like the people Daisy likes. I never want there to be any conflict between us.â
âIâll like your friends too,â Meg said.
âI donât have friends,â Nick said.
âThat I can believe,â Clark said. âThatâs probably the first honest thing heâs ever told you.â
âGo,â Meg said to Clark. âI donât know what you think youâre accomplishing here, but all youâre doing is making me angry. Go home and play with your train set.â
âI havenât played with my train set in three years!â Clark said. âAnd Iâm not leaving you alone with Mr. Friendless over here. You may think youâre safe, but I know youâre not, and I wonât leave the two of you alone.â
âYouâre not my chaperon, Clark,â Meg said.
âIâm your guardian angel,â Clark replied. âYou might as well go, Sebastian. Iâm sticking with Meg like glue.â
âHe loves you,â Nick said. âIâm glad. He can watch out for you if something happens to me.â
âSomethingâs going to happen if you donât get out of here,â Clark said.
Meg held Nickâs hand. âThereâs so much more,â she said.
âWe have
