happen to you once there wasnât a place for you to stay?â he asked.
Hamlet closed his eyes and nodded his head slowly. âIâm afraid I was destined for . . . the Big Sleep,â he said.
A hush fell over the room. We all knew he wasnât talking about a long nap.
He opened his eyes and continued. âI think Dr. Greenbriar likes me,â he said. âHeâs been keeping me here in his study instead of in one of the kennels down in the basement. But I know itâs only a matter of time now.â
âUnless,â said Chester.
All eyes turned to him.
âUnless we can find Archie.â
âBut how?â Hamlet asked.
âIâm going to check out your file,â Chester answered. âI know my way around the office. Iâve been inside before. Your file should tell us where Archie is.â
âBut if heâs in Europeâ,â Hamlet said.
âI doubt that. No, my guess is that heâs much closer to home.â
And with that Chester exited.
Hamlet regarded us all with sad eyes. âIâm sorry to be so much trouble,â he said.
âMy goodness,â said Georgette, âit seems to me you put yourself through a lot more trouble making up stories about secrets and talking bones than any kind of trouble you could put us through.â
âThatâs what I donât get,â said Bob. âWhy didnât you just ask us to help you?â
Hamlet sighed. âIâm a useless old mutt,â he said. âNobody wants me anymore. Not Archie. Not his cousin. I couldnât ask, donât you see? What if you had all said no?â
No one had an answer to that. All I could think about was how lucky I was to have theMonroesâand how I couldnât wait to get back home and roll around the living room floor with Toby.
I heard sniffling. Bob said, âThere, there, dear, itâs all right.â
I turned. Linda shook her head sadly as she looked at us looking at her. âItâs the kids,â she explained. âWe havenât heard from them in over a week. Itâs so unlike them. They said they would write every day. Bob was trying to break out of here in order to find them. What if . . . what if somethingâs happened to them? What if . . . theyâve left us here and theyâre never coming back?â
She began to cry. Georgette ran over to her and licked away her tears.
Felony turned to Miss Demeanor. âItâs a regular weeporama around here,â she said. The fat cat nodded.
âIf you donât mind my interruptinâ group therapy,â Felony said to the rest of us, âI got a question for Hamlet. Itâs about Rosebud. We all heard her speak. Soâs what I wanna know isââ
âOh, that,â said Hamlet. If dogs could blush, he would have been blushing. He opened his mouth to explain, but didnât get a word out because Chester suddenly burst into the room.
âIâve found Archie!â he cried. âThereâs only one problemâheâs got two addresses. One is here in town. The otherâs in London.â
âLondon!â Hamlet exclaimed. âI knew it, I knew it! Heâs playing the palace, sipping tea with the queen, watching the changing of the guardââ
âExcuse me,â Chester said. âLondon is the name of the next town. Itâs only a couple of miles from Centerville.â
âReally?â said Hamlet. He seemed relieved but disappointed at the same time. âArchie always wanted to sip tea with the queen. Ah, well, another time perhaps.â
âWhatâre we waiting for?â asked The Weasel. âIâve already used the code to disarm the security system here. Iâll bet the same codeâll work on the gate.â
âNow yer talkinâ like a weasel!â Felony exclaimed, and I couldnât help noticing The Weasel puff up with pride.
âItâll be
