guards at the top, otherwise anyone at all could just walk up and down there.â
âIt doesnât matter,â said Miller, looking more closely. âThe gateâs well and truly locked, and it looks like theyâve thrown stones down to block the stairway.â
âYou see,â Ricardo sniffed. âI told you.â
We waited a bit longer. It seemed like hours.
âThis is really boring now,â said Francesco.
âRight, Iâm sick of this,â said Jem. âLetâs get on with it.â
We all unsheathed our swords and started walking quietly, together, in the direction that Papa had taken. After a few paces, I could make out the shape of another gate set low into the mighty wall.
âWhat the hell?â Miller stopped suddenly.
My uncle, Ebenezer Black, stood in the entrance to the tunnel with two pistols aimed straight at my head.

Into the labyrinth
âHere you are at last, lass,â Ebenezer said. âI thought youâd never arrive.â
âUncle! What are you doing here?â
Ebenezer took a few steps towards us, but the pistol muzzles did not waver from my face.
âAs you see, I have come to abort your ridiculous plan.â
âWhat?â I nearly shouted it.
âGet out of the way, Black, or youâll answer to me,â Jem warned.
âIf you so wish,â said Ebenezer, with a lazy motion of one wrist that brought a gun to bear on Jemâs chest.
âWhat are you talking about, Uncle?â I pleaded.
âThere have been rumours for some weeks that the city would be attacked on the new moon,â he said quietly. âImagine my surprise when I heard the raid was to be led by our pirate princess.â
Gideon was growling low in his throat, and I put out a hand to steady him. He had no idea who Ebenezer was â only that he stood in our way with his pistols aimed at us.
âI must admit I was relieved to hear you were alive,â Ebenezer went on. âDiablo came to me three days ago to tell me you were dead.â
âYou spoke to Diablo?â Wherever we went, that brute was always snapping at our heels.
âI had little choice in the matter. He came to threaten me over a silly trifle â a chalice that had once been in my possession. You may remember it, Lily.â
âOf course. But what does he want with it?â I was playing for time. I felt sure there must be some mistake, some way to talk him out of standing in our path.
âI cannot explain the workings of Diabloâs feeble mind to you,â Ebenezer said. âAlas, as the chalice had been stolen some months ago, he left empty-handed.â
âDid he tell you he had killed me?â I asked.
âHe laughed about it.â Ebenezerâs voice was bitter. âThat man is too vile to be borne. But that very morning I saw your ship from the headland and I wondered â¦â
âItâs you whoâs been spying on us?â
âI like to know whatâs going on, in case I need to intervene,â he said. âNow it appears that I do. You cannot attack the city tonight. I will not allow it.â
I took half a step towards him. âI thought you were on our side,â I said.
âThat depends entirely on which side youâre on, Lily.â
âWhat do you mean?â I asked.
âItâs simple,â Ebenezer replied. âIf you and yourmen have returned to the islands to help rid us of the French, then I am at your service.â
âCome on then, blast you,â said Jem.
âOn the other hand ââ
âBy Drakeâs beard!â Jem fumed. âWe havenât got all night.â
âOn the other hand,â Black continued, unperturbed, âif your plan is to replace the French invasion with a British one, then I will do everything in my power to prevent it.â
âBut the French are evil!â I cried. âTheyâre trying to take over the
