the building. Built about two feet off the ground, it was damp, smelled bad, and was littered with trash. He slithered along like a big snake until he was only a few feet away from the two men still left standing.
âI think we got him!â one said.
âThink again,â Frank said from the darkness under the building, and opened fire.
The two men went down in an awkward sprawl. Frank rolled out from under the building and got to his boots.
âMy leg's broke,â one of the men moaned. âOh, crap, it hurts bad."
âI'm hard hit,â another one said. âWhere is that bastard?"
âRight here,â Frank said. âAnd if either of you reaches for a gun you're dead."
âSam?â said the one with a broken leg said. âSam? Answer me, boy."
There was no response. The only person Sam was going to answer to was God.
âHe's dead,â Frank told the would-be kidnapper just as a crowd began to gather, some of them with lanterns.
âWho the hell are you?â The other outlaw groaned the question.
Frank ignored that. âGet the doctor.â He tossed the command to the gathering crowd. âAnd someone else get the undertaker."
âWho are these men?â someone in the crowd asked. âAnd what did they do?"
âThey're part of the Pine and Vanbergen gangs,â Frank told him. âThey were attempting to kidnap Mrs. Browning for ransom."
âGood God!â a man said.
âHow the hell did you know that?â one of the wounded outlaws asked. âAnd who the hell are you?"
âSomebody talked,â the other outlaw said. âThat's how he knew. Man ... Ned is gonna be pissed about this."
âWho are you?â the outlaw persisted.
âFrank Morgan."
âOh, hell!"
The town's doctor pushed his way through the growing crowd and ordered lamps brought closer to the wounded men. âThat one's dead,â he said, pointing. âThis one's got a broken leg.â He moved over to the third man. âShot in the side. Bullet went clear through. Some of you men carry these men over to the jail. Where is Mr. Malone?"
âRight here,â a tall thin man said, pushing his way through the crowd. âHow many dead?"
âOne. The other two will live, I'm sure."
âOne is better than none,â Malone the undertaker said. âIf he's got the money to pay for my services."
âYou bastard!â the outlaw with the broken leg said. âYou give him a decent sendinâ off, damn you."
âHe'll get planted,â Malone said. âHow solemn and dignified will depend on the cash in his pockets."
âGet the living out of here,â the doctor told the volunteers.
Frank spotted Willis in the crowd. âI'm going to need some extra blankets from your store."
âI'll get them and bring them over to the jail,â the store owner said. âAnything else?"
âLaudanum,â the doctor said.
âI'll get it from Jiggs at the apothecary."
Doc Bracken stood up. âI've done all I can do here."
âI'll be at the jail,â Frank told him.
When the wounded outlaws were patched up and locked down, Frank went looking for Hal and Jimmy. He found them in their room at the hotel.
âBig doin's, huh, Frank?â Jimmy asked.
âShaping up that way. How tired are you boys?"
âNot tired at all,â Hal replied. âMatter of fact, we had just finished washinâ up and was thinkinâ of findinâ us an all-night poker game."
Frank told them about the planned kidnapping, and that got their attention.
âWhat can we do to help?â Jimmy asked. âName it, Frank. We owe you more'un one favor."
âYou'll be well paid for this, I assure you. Want to stand guard at the Browning house?"
âConsider it done. Have you talked to Mrs. Browning about it?"
âI'll do that right now. You boys get dressed and we'll walk over together.â Frank smiled. âThat is,
