George,â Shane inserted. âShe oversees the hiring and termination process and ensures the employees have proper working conditions. In addition to all that, sheâs in charge of payroll.â
âI didnât realize my brother outlined my duties for you,â she said.
âGeorge likes to talk business. Youâre part of that world.â
âWhat was Shane like as an adolescent?â Caleb asked, his keen gaze studying them both. She wouldâve liked to ask what he saw that was so interesting.
She gave Shane a sideways glance. âA lot like he is today, actually. Reserved. Determined to do everything on his own. Convinced his opinion is the only right one.â
âSounds about right.â Josh snorted. âYou mustâve been terrified.â
âAllison isnât terrified of anything.â Shaneâs sardonic reply evoked laughter from the group.
Her smile felt forced. He clearly didnât know her well. He was the one whoâd intimidated her from the start, the one whose good opinion sheâd craved.
âMy turn.â Crossing her arms, she met Calebâs stare with her own. âI want to hear about Shane the lawman.â
Shane hung his head and groaned. âThereâs really not much to tell.â
âStop being so modest.â Josh socked his arm.
âIf anyone has a right to boast, itâs him,â Jessica said with conviction.
Shane shot Allison a help me look. He despised being the center of attention. Not about to miss their recounting of his exploits, she shrugged. Displeasure twisted his mouth.
âShaneâs the type of man whoâll help anyone without thought to his own personal comfort or safety,â Josh said. âHeâs got a will of iron and nerves of steel.â
Josh listed the ways Shane had impacted their lives. Heâd once hunted and captured a criminal whoâd taken Nathan captive. Heâd rounded up a gang of outlaws whose female leader had almost killed Caleb and his wife, Rebecca. When a series of crimes had been committed at Quinnâs store and Nicole had been attacked, Shane worked with Quinn to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Grant spoke up at the end, his expression one of earnest respect. âNot so long ago, I woke up on Jessicaâs property with no memory of who I was. Shane couldâve thrown me in jail that first day. Even after I discovered evidence that pointed to a sordid past, he believed in my innocence. Things couldâve gone very differently if not for him.â
The adults fell silent. Allison nudged Shane. âSounds like the contents of an adventure book to me.â
He kicked up a shoulder. âItâs my job. I do whatâs required of my position, the same as any other lawman in this nation is expected to do.â
âHandsome and humble...â Jessica huffed a dramatic sigh. âIf only we could convince one of the single ladies around here that heâs worth the effort.â
Kate shot Allison a significant look. âWhat about you, Allison? Are you involved with anyone?â
Her cheeks blazed with heat at the implication. âNot at the moment.â
Nathan elbowed Josh. Someone let loose a low whistle.
âIsnât that convenient. Shaneâs not courting anyone.â
âWhen has he ever?â Nathanâs young brother-in-law, Will, observed with a hearty laugh.
Shane threw up his hands. âThatâs enough punishment for one night.â
Threading his fingers through hers, he pushed past Josh, guiding her away from their group.
âYou donât have to go,â Caleb called after them. âWeâll promise to behave.â
He lifted a hand in acknowledgment. Still, he didnât slow his pace until theyâd left his friends behind and were on the opposite side of the church near the cemetery. He dropped her hand the moment they stopped.
âIt wasnât that bad, was it?â
