Jolene, since Bruce often sought her advice. Because sheâd lost her own mother when she was relatively young, Rachel identified with the child.
In other words, there was nothing romantic between her and Bruce. Rachel was seeing Nate Olsen, although the time they actually spent together was limited, since the navyâs demands came first.
âI need someone to take me shopping,â Jolene said in a small, uncertain voice. âDad said I could buy an Easter dress.â
âIâd be happy to go with you,â Rachel assured the youngster.
âMy dad wants to talk to you, all right?â The little girlâs voice was more cheerful now.
âRachel,â Bruce said. âWould it be a bother?â
âNot at all.â The truth was, she could do with something new herself. âIâd love it.â
âWhen can you go?â
Since Easter was the following weekend, Rachel figured it would need to be soon. âHow about this afternoon?â she suggested. She had a rare Saturday free, which sheâd arranged on the off-chance thatNate would be available. But it was already midafternoon and she hadnât heard from him, so she assumed he wouldnât be calling.
âThis afternoon is perfect,â Bruce said.
Rachel heard Jolene shout with glee in the background.
âIâll bring her by in an hour if that works for you,â Bruce said.
âThat would be great.â
They discussed a price range for the new outfit and after a few words of farewell, ended the call. Rachel always enjoyed her âgirl-timeâ with Jolene. When sheâd started fourth grade, Jolene had asked her to attend the schoolâs open house, and with Bruceâs blessing, Rachel had gone. Afterward Jolene had written her a lovely thank-you note, which Rachel treasured. She had a stack of artwork that Jolene had colored or drawn or constructed for her. These were things a little girl would normally give her mother, and Rachel felt honored to play that roleâpart-time surrogate momâin Joleneâs life.
As Rachel finished brushing her hair, her phone rang again. Even before she answered, she had the sinking feeling it would be Nate.
It was.
âAre you free?â he asked.
âI will be later,â she told him. Nate was working on some major project aboard the aircraft carrier.Because of it, they hadnât been together in more than a week.
âI thought you took the day off,â he complained.
âI did.â She didnât mention how many favors sheâd had to call in to arrange a free Saturday. âWhen I didnât hear from you, I figured you were still hung up on this project.â
Nate groaned. âCan you cancel whatever youâve got planned?â
Rachel refused to do that to Jolene. âNo. Itâs Jolene. Iâm taking her shopping for an Easter dress.â
The line went silent. âAll right,â he said reluctantly, his disappointment obvious. âI wouldâve phoned sooner if Iâd had the chance.â
âI know.â Rachel was disappointed, too. âWhat about later?â
âWhat time?â
âIâm not sure.â She wouldnât know that until she got to the shopping mall. âSay six?â
âThatâs too late,â he muttered. âI have a commitment this eveningâa stag I have to go to. Dinner and, uh, entertainment. The whole deal.â
âWellâ¦weâll get together soon,â she assured him. It was the best she could offer.
âSoon,â Nate agreed with a sigh.
They spoke until the doorbell rang. Assuming it was Bruce and Jolene, Rachel ended the conversation with Nate and opened the door to discover TeriMiller waiting there. âTurn on your television,â Teri insisted, storming into the small rental house.
âMy television?â Rachel said. âWhat for?â
âRemember when we were over at Maryellenâs last
