âUmmm . . . Mom and Dad, can we have a snack?â
âSure, princess,â her dad answered.
âCan we have someââ
Bam! The front door slammed.
âHello?â Austin asked from the hallway.
âWeâre in here!â April yelled.
âGreat, youâre home,â their mom said with a smile. âI was getting ready to call Rita.â
âThis is a sleeping record for you, Austin,â Mr. Appleton said, putting his hand on Austinâs shoulder.
âI guess, uh . . .â Austin said, looking at April.
Oh no! Oh no! Austin, think. Think of something to say. We canât get caught now!
Austin stared at April. April swallowed hard.
April jumped in. âI thought you and Michael stayed up playing Michaelâs new video game.â April had her eyes locked on Austinâs.
âWell, yeah. We played it for a while. It was pretty late when we went to bed. But I guess, I was just, uh, tired,â Austin said, smirking at April.
April smiled. They both looked at their mom and dad.
Mrs. Appleton opened the refrigerator. âAnyway, itâs perfect timing. You kids ready for a snack?â
Grace and Eve came running down the stairs.
âEveryone go wash your hands then come sitââ ACHOO!!! âI wonder what is bothering my allergies. Iâm usually only allergic to animals,â Mrs. Appleton said, looking at Aprilâs father.
April, Austin, Eve, and Grace walked toward the bathroom, chuckling. They all looked at each other and smiled. Austin ran into the bathroom first. He slammed the door in the girlsâ faces.
Grace looked at April. âI guess everything is back to normal in Appleton-land?â
âI sure hope so,â April said, letting out a huge breath. âWell, I will be up to my eyeballs in laundry and dishes. But itâs better than what Mom and Dad would do to meââ
Austin came out of the bathroom. He quietly said to April, âYou can start by cleaning my room tonight. You know Dad expects our rooms clean by the time we leave for Sunday dinner at Nanaâs. You may want to get a head start.â
He walked away, chuckling to himself. Graceâs eyes bulged. She pointed at Austinâs back. She covered her mouth with one hand, so as to not let out a loud laugh. Eve and April started to laugh, looking at the little white chunks of dog hair stuck to the back of his shirt.
âOMG! OMG!â Grace said, laughing.
April closed her eyes. I wish my new glasses were here right now.
The doorbell rang. Aprilâs mother opened the door and the delivery man handed her a small package. Aprilâs mom looked at it. âApril, your new glasses are here.â Her mother walked into the kitchen with the package and began opening it.
âYou just did that, huh?â Grace asked, wide-eyed.
âYep,â April smirked. âSo, what are you guys doing next weekend?â
