you wanted me to leave you alone.â
âYou are impertinent.â
Dennis grinned. âYes, I am. Feels great, by the way. But thatâs what winning is all about.â
âI donât believe you. There is no such man.â
âThatâs a good attitude to take. It saves face and keeps you from having to do anything. Of course, you feel stupid when the facts come out.â
âWhat facts?â
âSend your niece back.â
âWhat?â
âI can talk to her. I canât talk to you.â
âYou cannot talk to her.â
âAs you like.â Dennis turned back to the bar and picked up his drink.
Minami glared at him for a moment, then went back to her table.
Michiko, without waiting for her, was cutting into the prime rib.
âStay away from that man.â
âWhy?â
âHe is not a nice man.â
âWhy, because he likes me?â
âHe does not like you. He wants to use you.â
âUse me how, Auntie?â
âTo get to me.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âYou know what I mean. We have to be careful. We are not in our homeland.â
Michiko made a face. âPlease. When you say things like that, you make it sound like we are in a spy novel.â
âWe are in a foreign country. We are not speaking in our native
tongue. It is not so easy to be clever with words. It is possible to make a slip.â
âAnd wouldnât that be awful . If we were to be embarrassed . To lose face .â
âYou are rude.â
âOh, pooh.â Michiko sawed at her meat. âYou just do not want me to have any fun.â
âThat is not true.â
âIt is so.â
âDo you think it is fun to drink with men in bars?â
âI did not say that.â
âWhat fun are you not having?â
âI am not having any . I am just following you around. It is boring.â
âYou knew it would not be Disney World.â
âOh, pooh.â Michiko made a face. âAnd then you have to pretend to solve a crime.â
âI do not pretend.â
Michiko pushed a carrot around on her plate. âWhat do we do tomorrow?â
âI have an interview with a newspaper.â
âOh.â The girl rolled her eyes. âWhoopdedo.â
From the door to the bar, Dennis Pride watched the two women with interest.
Now how could he make something out of that?
Chapter 19
Aaron Grant ran his column though spell-check and hit SEND. He resented doing that. He liked the idea of dropping it on the editorâs desk. He kept hoping the e-mail would screw up and make the editor prefer a hard copy. But it never did.
Aaron went out, walked down the street to his car.
Cora was leaning on the hood.
Aaron smiled. âHi, Cora. What are you doing here? Checking up on your competition?â
âHuh?â
He jerked his thumb. âThe Sudoku Lady. Sheâs in there giving an interview.â
âYouâre kidding.â
âFreddieâs interviewing her about her sudoku books.â
âSheâs up there right now?â
âYeah. With her niece and some guy. I think heâs her agent.â
âZombie in a suit?â
âThatâs him.â
âWell, isnât that interesting?â
âYou didnât know about it?â
âNo.â
Aaron frowned. âSo what are you doing here?â
âOh. I want to talk to you without Sherry.â
âThat sounds ominous.â
âNot at all. You know Iâm trying to move out so I wonât be underfoot.â
âYou donât have to do that.â
âThatâs what Sherry says. Sheâs just trying to be polite. Now youâre trying to be polite. Everyoneâs trying to be polite, and nothing gets said. You kids are young. You wanna start a family.â
âWho says we want to start a family?â
âOf course you want to start a family. Everyone wants to start a
