Chapter One

“No! No! No!” I shouted with frustration and pounded my fist on the steering wheel as the red gas gauge light flickered and then died on my dashboard. My heart sank as the car stalled right there in the middle of the desolate road.
Shoot! I’d hoped I could make it home — or at the very least to the garage — before I ran out of gas, but it seemed luck wasn’t on my side tonight. I’d worked a double shift as a waitress at a truck stop in the next town and I was so tired I could barely see straight. That stupid gas light always popped off and on. It had a glitch and I’d hoped the light was just screwing with me tonight. Well, it seemed it did screw me over and good.
I looked out at the blackness and shivered as the cold October air crept into the car. Midnight had come and gone and there was literally no one living along this stretch of farmland. No way to get help. I’d left my cell at home this morning as the battery had died.
Man! Of all times for the car to run out of gas. Why now?
No use crying over it. I could either stay here and sleep until someone came along, or get out and walk the five or so miles in my skimpy waitress outfit to get to the garage my ex-boyfriend owned and lived in a room at the back.
Just thinking of Gil chased the chill right out of me. That man had a sexy way about him and I still wondered why I’d broken up with him. Oh yeah, now I remembered. He’d wanted to share me with other guys. Sharing turned him on.
I’d told him where he could stick that proposition, and I’d regretted breaking up with him ever since. The more I’d thought about his sharing idea, the more I’d liked it. But pride kept me away from him. I wasn’t going to go begging to get back into his bed.
I sighed and closed my eyes. And waited.
I had almost fallen asleep when I heard the distinct rumble of motorcycle engines. I’d been around Gil long enough to recognize the sound of bikes, because he was a biker himself. When I opened my eyes, two motorcycles were almost upon my car.
Nervousness wrapped around me. I was alone. And there were two bikers. Big guys, dressed in black leather and black helmets, their faces hidden behind dark visors.
I swallowed and my heart began to pound as they slowed and came to a stop directly beside my car.
    Shit .
They switched off their engines and turned to look at me. Panic wrapped around me. They looked dangerous. I wanted to get out of the car and run into the nearby fields and hide. The biker closest to me, got off his bike, came over to the driver side of my car, and tapped on the window with his leather gloved finger.
I shook my head. No way was I going to open the window. No freaking way.
He straightened and then for a long minute just stared up the road. I tensed as he reached up and unbuckled his helmet.
Oh no. These guys meant business. They knew I was alone. They could do whatever they wanted to me. My heart felt as if it were about to explode as I awaited his next move.
He lifted the helmet off his head and when I saw the familiar shaggy hair, I breathed a sigh of relief.
    Gil . My hero .
I opened the door and he frowned.
“What in hell are you doing out here all alone?” he growled.
“Ran out of gas. I need a fill-up.”
He groaned and the erotic sound made me aware of how he took my meaning. My heart began to pound again and my breathing was suddenly too shallow.
“It’s too late for you to be out. Something could have happened, Zoe.”
“Well, maybe I wanted something to happen,” I teased.
The way he tensed and the way his gaze darkened with lust led me to believe he was taking my comments very seriously.
The other biker shifted uneasily on his bike. For a moment, I’d forgotten he was there. But now I was very aware of both of them. I hadn’t been laid since breaking up with Gil several months ago. Since then, I’d played it safe. Too damned safe. Avoiding men. Avoiding sex. Avoiding Gil.
    “You better quit
