to yours.”
He shifted us, rolling my hips up on their side. I felt
his tip rubbing between my legs, a single thrust away from entering
my leaking slit.
My lips trembled softly with my moan. He pushed inside
me, banishing all my other thoughts, drawing me into his deeper,
primal dance, where quivering flesh replaced words.

IV: Intrusions

I screamed. Every muscle in my body fired, hurling its
energy into one part, burning with a merciless need to feel William
against me.
My fist connected with his jaw and he rocked back. I was
already poised to throw another punch, but passing through his
defenses and knocking him square on the face took me by surprise.
So did the sickening blow my fist made as it landed on
his skin. Sure, the gloves I wore were padded, but the loud clapping
noise made my heart race.
William staggered backward, grabbing his knees with one
hand to steady himself.
“ Holy shit! Are you alright?” I took a few
tentative steps forward.
He held up one hand, sniffed loudly, and spat. A tiny
stream of blood was embedded in the clear liquid.
“ Good one, Rosie. Bad one for me,” he said,
finding his footing to stand. “Let's take a break.”
He turned his back and walked to the canteen and towel
we kept by his weights. I stayed in place until he'd chugged half the
bottle, too freaked out to move.
What the hell was going on? I couldn't believe I'd
suddenly had a breakthrough in martial arts and gotten through
defenses he'd honed for years.
I took off my helmet and wiped the sweat from my brow.
William never wore one, not when he was training with me, too
confident he wouldn't need it.
I guessed over-confidence had gone out the window after
what had just happened. But it didn't bring me any joy. Just dumb,
frightened shock.
    “ Hey, I don't have a clue what just happened. I
never expected to...” My words wilted. I reached for his
shoulder.
He wheeled around, his eyes narrowed, glowering. “Don't
apologize. It's not like you knocked out any teeth. If you were a
bigger man, I would've been in real trouble. That's my fault for
throwing away safety.”
He chuckled. I toyed with my bottom lip, digesting the
eerie sound. There was no real humor in his laugh.
“ What's going on?” I wanted to get to the
bottom of it.
“ I'm off my fucking game. That's what.” He
looked at me and wiped stray water from his chin, jaw clenched like a
titan.
    “ Huh?”
“ I'm not ready for this fight.” William
tossed the canteen at the ground and ran his fingers through his
short, sandy hair. “And I shouldn't be dragging you into this.”
“ No, tell me! This is the first I've heard about
another fight on your books.” I paced around him slowly, my
curiosity more than piqued.
The fights were the center of his life. I knew that
much, but I didn't know he got so stressed over them.
    Or was this something new?
I suppressed a chill. However much my heart throbbed for
him, it was a cruel reminder that I didn't know as much about this
amazing man as I thought.
But I wanted to rectify that. Soon.
“ I'm fighting the biggest MMA champion in the Twin
Cities in a couple weeks. Little Georgie.” He plopped down in
the old metal chair. “I know what it sounds like, but trust me,
the name isn't accurate. Little Georgie's a three hundred pound Swede
who could've given Goliath a run for his money.”
My lips curled up. “Why do they call them like
that?”
William shrugged. He leaned back in the chair,
stretching himself, exposing his hard muscles to me again.
    He never wore a shirt
anymore while sparring. Of course, that added plenty of terrible
distractions to our routine.
It was a miracle I managed to hit him at all, let alone the way I'd
clocked him in the face.
    “ You'll beat him,” I said simply. I couldn't
imagine any other outcome. “Just like you did that Ukrainian
guy.”
“ Only if I train, and get my ass together. It's
gonna take a lot to down Georgie. Orange Coal was a sneaky bastard.
