so. What are you doing on this side of the town?”
“Came to get me some of the best hotdogs around.” He joked. “This is my friend, Reese.” He introduced me. Friend? “Give her whatever her heart’s desire.”
“Hi.” I gave Charlie a small wave and a half-smile.
After we got our orders, Jake and I sat at one of the brown picnic tables. He wasn’t lying about the hotdogs, they were awesome. We talked for what seemed like hours, about random stuff. I told him funny stories from my childhood while he told me about working at Cave Ink. It was pretty calm and ordinary compared to the night before and I enjoyed it.

Jake pulled up in front of my house. Heath peeped through the curtains and saw me getting out of his car, luckily it wasn’t the recognizable Prius so he didn’t know who it was.
When I came through the door his eyes were wide. “Reesie?” He couldn’t hide his astonishment, and he looked angry. I froze, heels in my hand, trying to think of what to say, so I just asked, “Where’s Caroline?”
“She’s not here, Reese.” I seriously have never seen him this angry before. Usually when he’s angry he would shut down, but not now – he looked like he wanted to explode. “Where in the bloody hell have you been?”
“Out.” I began to head for the stairs but he darted in front of me.
“Reese?” And there it was, the apprehensive look that made him look so cute. He couldn’t compare to Jake, but it had a serious effect on me. I pursed my lips and inhaled deeply.
    “A date.”
“A what? A fucking what?” Why was he so surprised? The fuck? Can’t I have a date?
“A date, Heath. Can’t I date?” My tone was more aggravated than it should have been, but I suddenly felt so infuriated.
“A fucking date? I have been home here worried sick about you while you were on a fucking date, and what, you spent the night?”
“Excuse me? Um… isn’t Caroline supposed to be here to keep you occupied? I don’t need you to patronize me.”
“Caroline and I had a fight okay, Reese! And I’m not patronizing you. I was worried out of my fucking mind. You never told me you had a date. You never answered any of my calls, my messages – nothing. What was I supposed to think? And who the hell is this date anyway? James Bond?”
“Just someone I met, Heath. Not a big deal.” I began to jog up the stairs.
“Seems like a big deal to me since you spent the night and came home with the whole walk of shame look thing.” He shouted.
I reached at the top of the stairs and paused when I heard him. Ugh! I was mad as hell. Who was he to pry? I don’t ask him questions about Caroline. I think I was madder at myself that he found out I was with someone. I wasn’t ready for him to know, maybe because I secretly hoped something could still happen between us. That I could finally have him.
I slammed my door shut behind me, threw my heels on the floor and jumped on my bed, staring at my ceiling for a few minutes. A barrage of thoughts ran through my mind; Jake; last night, this morning, just now – everything! I was fighting myself.
I took up my phone and set Tove Lo – Talking Body as my ringtone. Now every time it rings, I’ll remember the first time Jake and I fucked. I placed my phone on my bedside table and closed my eyes.
Ping! I heard a message come in on my phone and reached for it. A WhatsApp message from Jake.
Jake: Just reached home and I miss you already. See you tomorrow ;)
This is not happening! This doesn’t feel real. What kind of fantasy was I living? I must be dreaming – had to be!

I woke up the next morning and got ready for school. I was late! I ran down the stairs with my boots and sweater in hand and saw Heath waiting on the sofa. Since when do I oversleep? I must have been exhausted from the happenings of yesterday.
“Sorry Heath, I overslept.” I told him as I hopped around trying to put on my combat boots.
“Don’t worry about it, Pieces.” He replied
