for your own good,” Molpe explained. “Since we feared an assassination attempt, we made a deal with the Styx monsters to keep you on the isle and to prevent the mermaids from approaching and discovering your presence.”
“ You really think she would have come after me?” Jenny’s heart ached. Even with the tight hug of Felipe’s arms and the sadness in her aunts’ eyes showing the depth of their caring, she couldn’t quite shrug it off. “This is unbelievable.”
“I wonder how she found out you were here ,” mused Raidne aloud. “Someone must have tattled.”
“ Whoever it is, they’ll be dealt with,” Thelxiope grimly announced.
“Indeed they shall, but in the meantime, we need to keep our darling Jenny safe.”
“I think I can provide aid there,” Felipe said, finally adding his voice to the discussion. “Let me take her to meet Lucifer. Once she’s in the inner ring under the Dark Lord’s protection, none will dare mess with her.”
“Except you don’t know what he wants her for.”
“I can assure you, whatever his reason, he wants her alive, though,” was Felipe’s retort.
“True.” Teles took on a pensive look. “The Undines wouldn’t be able to reach her there. Too far from the shores of the sea.”
“Hold on a second.” Jenny waved her hand to draw attention. “I never said I wanted to go. I’m not a coward to run away. This is my mother you believe who is attacking the isle, which makes this my problem. My fight. I should be staying to deal with it.”
“Have we taught you nothing?” Molpe chided. “Altruism is for heroes and those with a death wish. We are sirens.”
“Not all of us,” Jenny muttered.
“Adopted counts,” Molpe said sternly. “And besides, we are still your guardians. If we say you’re going, then you will go.”
Determined to face her past, Jenny stood and glared. “I am a grown woman, and I say no. This is my life, which means I get to choose what happens to me.”
    Or not.

Chapter Ten
Hearing Jenny’s life story , and, worse, seeing, even feeling, the emotions coursing through her at the news of her mother’s perfidy, struck at Felipe’s heart.
He couldn’t blame her for wanting to remain and confront the mermaid determined to mistreat her. So it was with more than a little shock that he watched as her grumpy aunt conked her on the head with the butt of the dagger she kept at her waist. Poor Jenny, practically mid sentence, her eyes rolled up in her head, and only his quick reflexes managed to catch her before she hit the floor.
“What the fuck was that for?” he yelled , doing his best to quell his snarling inner feline.
Thelxiope shrugged. “She was being stubborn, and I wasn’t in the mood to waste time arguing.”
That was her reasoning? “You hit her!”
“It was just a little tap , and she’ll heal quick enough.”
“But why?” Felipe asked , dividing his attention between the limp, vulnerable woman in his arms and the one his cat wanted to skin alive.
“Are you deaf? I wasn’t in the mood to waste another moment. We need to get her off this island.”
“You could have spent a few more minutes trying to convince her.”
“You know, I much prefer a man who does as he’s told instead of disagreeing with me,” grumbled Thelxiope.
“Then you’ve been missing out,” snarled Felipe. “Might as well invest in some vibrators if all you want is a well -behaved cock.”
Raidne stifled a giggle. Thelxiope glowered , and her dagger lifted in a menacing fashion.
“I think we all need to calm down,” Molpe said in an attempt to mediate.
Hackles raised and thoroughly irritated—less by the conversation and more by the injury done to Jenny—Felipe wasn’t in the mood to back down. “I’ll calm the fuck down when this psycho stops acting like such a bitch.”
“Thelxy, why don’t you just apologize? Poor Felipe here isn’t used to your ways.”
“You’re taking his side? Well, I never,” huffed
