Undone
The Braille Club, London. Two Years On. Pandora Zone. Warm fingers caress Siena’s arm. Her breathing accelerates. Then comes the soft touch on her skin as her cuff is adjusted on her wrist. Siena’s heart knocks painfully in her chest as she imagines those fingers on her husband.
Nick
Nick Waters secured the respect of those around him, a feat in itself. Other inmates came to rely on him. This gave him status within the prison. Everyone called him Psych; it annoyed him at first but he now saw it as acceptance. He knew they shortened the term psychologist as a nickname, even the staff called him by that name now. He finally belonged and the time passed quicker than expected. In fact, he learned more in two years and six months than he ever had in private practice. There were so many prisoners with undiagnosed conditions. The prison was as near to an asylum as he could have asked for. He was completely in his comfort zone.
The first thing he did was to find out the name of the prison guard who whispered in his ear when he’d first arrived in the prison. The same guard who attacked him. His leg had healed slowly, it was a bad break and a constant reminder of what had been done to him. Barnes, the prisoner who broke his nose, had been moved to a more secure unit, which was a pity. Nick would have liked to repay the favour. However, the guard, a man called Cassidey, was still on his block. Nick could get some of his patients who owed him to pick a fight with Cassidey but that would only result in a crackdown for all inmates and solitary confinement for his men. No, there had to be another way.
Nick stumbled on it by chance during a routine session with an inmate. He mentioned Cassidey. Nick, never one to miss an opportunity, delved deeper. The story was similar to Nick’s but not nearly as severe. Cassidey only cracked his ribs but the setup was identical. Nick questioned as many inmates under hypnosis as he could about Cassidey. A pattern emerged. Cassidey was the go to prison officer for intimation and beatings. Were the staff aware of their colleague’s behaviour? Nick set about finding out. Everything took time but that was something he had in abundance. Gradually bit by bit he got the information he was after.
The fiasco with Toby Fraser had been a setback but Nick recruited others to spy on Siena. He had three different people working for him now on the outside and the information was a lifeline. He saw that Siena was recovering; she’d got too skinny for his taste but now looked healthy and happy. The twins were getting bigger too. The girl was so like Siena. It was a pity things couldn’t be different, she’d be a beauty like her mother, but Nick resigned himself that a price must be paid. The twins were the collateral damage required to secure Siena.
Chapter 16
The Braille Club Undone
The Braille Club, London. Two Years On. Pandora Zone . Suddenly Siena and Benedict stiffen, confused by the second bell. The air changes again; Siena is aware of power and arrogance as new fingers grab her left wrist and roughly snap the cuffs on, joining them completely. They are both rigid, barely breathing. Their bodies and minds a cacophony of volatile emotions.
Virinder
Virinder was extremely nervous, so much so he’d lost weight over the last few weeks, although he’d barely noticed. He was to attend his first sensory lesson today and he was trying to keep calm. Beads of sweat glistened on his forehead as he approached a woman seated at a desk.
“Virinder, lovely to meet you. I’m Grace, and you’re right on time. Please come this way.”
Virinder followed her into a room, his heart crashing around in his chest. This was a bad idea, he thought. He took a deep breath.
“Please sit, Virinder. Can I offer you a refreshment?”
“No,” said Virinder. “I’m fine.”
Grace
Grace looked at the man opposite her and knew the last thing he felt was fine. When she
