now. She nodded. âAll right. And youâll let me know if you find out anything at all?â
He nodded. âIâll stop by this evening.â He handed the tracking device to Carmen, then took Sophieâs arm and guided her back to the driverâs side of the car. âI know this is hard,â he said. âBut try to stay strong, for Laurenâs sake. This is a priority now. Weâll do everything we can to find her.â
âYou believe me, donât you?â She studied his face, searching for confirmation that he was on her side. âYou believe that I smelled Laurenâs perfume and I recognized her handwriting?â
âI believe you.â
âYouâre not just saying it to be nice?â
âI work with a dog who can recognize the faintest scentsâones the human nose canât detect. Why wouldnât you recognize a perfume your sister wore all the time? Scent is one of the most powerful senses, and even though we donât have the ability of dogs, we associate certain smells with specific people and situations.â
âAre you comparing me to a dog?â She managed a smile to show she wasnât insulted.
âHey, I meant it as a compliment. I think a lot of my dog.â
âIâll remember that.â Though dogs frightened her, she wished she had someone she could feel as close to right now.
âHang in there.â He squeezed her shoulder. âIâll see you this evening. Maybe we can go to dinner. It will do you good to get out of the hotel for a while.â
âAll right. See you then.â She slid into the driverâs seat and fit the key into the ignition. Sheâd do as he suggested and focus on staying strong, for Laurenâs sake. But sheâd never imagined how hard that would be. Today had been like losing her sister all over again.

âW HAT Â IF Â WE â RE looking in the wrong direction, and Prentice doesnât have anything to do with Lauren Starlingâs disappearance?â Marco Cruz, his expression unreadable behind his dark sunglasses, asked the question as he and Rand and Lotte headed to the Country Inn that afternoon.
âAnythingâs possible,â Rand said. âMaybe itâs an incredible coincidence that everything appears to point back to him.â
âPrentice knew Lauren,â Marco said. âMaybe she even came here to see him. But I donât see any motivation for him to kidnap her.â
âMaybe she found out something about his operation that he didnât want getting out.â
âIn that case, I think heâd kill her. Why keep her around for a month?â
âI donât know, but I hope Sophieâs right and Lauren really did write that letter. Wherever she is, I hope sheâs still alive.â
âAfter all sheâs been through, the woman deserves a break,â Marco said.
âYeah. She dropped everything to come down here and look for her sisterânot many people would do that.â
âI was talking about Lauren, but yeah, I can see itâs been hard on Sophie, too.â
Rand hoped Sophie was able to get some rest at her hotel this afternoon, though he doubted it. She clearly felt responsible for her sister, almost the way a mother might feel about a child. âDo you have any brothers and sisters?â he asked.
âIâve got six sisters.â Marco folded his arms over his chest. âIâm the youngest.â
Rand started to make a joke about the baby of the family, but nothing about the muscular, six-foot, exâSpecial Forces DEA agent said âbaby.â âDo they all still try to look after you?â he asked.
âThey do. When I was still in California they were always up in my business, telling me what to do, what to eat, what to wear, who to date. I told them I had one mother, I didnât need six more, but they donât listen.â
âI guess
