pause for a moment. She was madly in love with a guy who cheated on her. I decided to go for it so I spit out, âListen ⦠Iâm so sorry, Lacey, but I saw him with Amber McKinnon before it happened.â
The phone went silent, although I could still hear her breathing. Then, very slowly, she said, âBefore it happened?â
âYes.â
âYou mean you saw it in one of your visions?â
âYes.â
âWhen did you have this vision ?â
âA few days before the party.â
âSo why are you just telling me about it now?â
âI donât know.â I stumbled over my words. âI didnât want to hurt youââ
âHurt me? And what youâre doing now isnât hurting me? Do you have proof? Besides your vision ?â Again she said the word like it was poisonous.
âNot really. But at the party they were standing together, and Amber had her fingers in his belt loop.â
âFor gawdâs sake, Indie! That is not making out. Burke and Amber went to the same elementary school. Theyâve known each other for years, and theyâre friends.â
âShe looked like she wanted to be more than friends,â I said, not knowing what else to say. Iâd really blown this.
âThatâs Amber. Sheâs like that with every guy.â
âI know. Thatâs my point.â
âDid you see them together in real life ?â Her words were pointed and very sarcastic.
âNot completely. But she was leaning on him, if you know what I mean.â
âBurke would never, ever sleep with her, no matter how hard she tried to get him into bed.â
âWhat if they just made out a bit?â
She sucked in a sharp breath before she quickly said, âMade out a bit? Indie, making out is not standing beside each other. Well, maybe it is in your books, because you know nothing about guys. Youâve never even had a boyfriend.â
Her words stung, but I was not going to react to the comment. âMy vision was very real,â I mumbled.
âReal? Are you freaking kidding me? Youâve lost your mind. Listen to me. Nothingâand I mean nothing âhappened.â Her voice came out like static, clipped and purposeful.
âI think something did happen,â I whispered.
âYou think! What do you mean you think? You either know, or you donât. And if you only think , then you donât know.â
âOkay,â I said. Confrontation was my worst enemy. I had told her, and now it was time to back off. Self-doubt crept into my mind. Maybe my vision was whacked. Maybe I was just a lunatic, like that Cayce guy. Did everything he saw come true?
âYou know, Indie, Iâve always been your friend and never cared that you were different.â
My stomach churned, and my hands started to shake. I had ruined the one true friendship I had. And for what? A stupid vision that may or may not be true.
âWhat? Did you have so much fun at the party that now you want in and to hell with me? Is that it?â She threw her words at me. âOr do you want Burke now because he was nice enough to drive you home?â
âNo!â
âAre you sure?â
âI donât want Burke. Heâs your boyfriend. Why would I want him?â
âThatâs true, Indie. He is my boyfriend.â
âHeâs going to hurt you.â
She fell silent. It felt like an eternity.
âIâm so sorry.â I could feel my throat closing in, making it hard to breathe. âMaybe my vision was wrong.â
âIt was wrong. Totally wrong. You know, I had something really important to tell you tonight, and youâre the first person I wanted to tell, and now youâve gone and wrecked my moment.â
âYou can still tell me,â I said quietly.
âI donât want to, because you wonât be happy for me. Well, maybe I will anyway, just to prove how wrong you really
