of my problems at that dinner, honestly.â
âI know,â she said. âBut I was serious about what I said, Amy. Not everyone makes it as far as you have, and it kills me sometimes that you donât just go and finish it up already.â
âIâve been busy,â said Amy. âI mean, until about a couple of weeks ago or so.â
Jane gave her a gentle hug. âI know, I know. How are you feeling about all that?â
âDunno,â she replied. âI guess it takes time. Honestly, I still donât believe this thing with Liz is real. And I know in my heart of hearts that he will see that and he will come back andââ
âYour heart is lying to you, Amy. Itâs only holding you back. And has been for some time.â
âI donât think you understandââ
âDonât I? Look, kiddo, sometimes men leave. And sometimes they make shocking choices when they do.â
âWe really never saw that coming, with Elliot. Did we?â
âIâm sure there were clues along the way. And hey, stranger things have happened. Right?â
âEven Jabba the Hutt couldnât beatââ
âLetâs just say his working at home wasnât the best idea for that marriage and leave it at that.â
âThat and running a business that involved daily deliveries.â
âDirty deliveries,â Jane mused. They looked at each other and laughed. âItâs tough, you know. Getting past having a life with someone. But once you start to see the difference between the person who you actually are and the one you were trying to be, it does get easier. Unless youâre Grant,â Jane added, watching Grant as he stared out the window onto the street, his mother repeatedly tapping his back and whispering âThere, there.â
Amy gave Jane a puzzled look. âIâm not sure what you mean,â she said. âI think Iâve always been the same person.â
Jane smiled. âYouâll get there. It takes time, but youâll get there.â She gave Amy a gentle squeeze. âSo what are you going to do about the shoes?â
âHuh?â
âThe shoes. Clarabelle told me the story Zoë told you guys.â
Amy shook her head in astonishment. âTell me, how does that kid know so many things? I mean, how could she possibly have so much information in that little head?â
âGod only knows. She comes from a long line of intellectuals is my only guess.â
âExcept for Elliot.â
âOh, definitely not Elliot,â Jane laughed. âSpeaking of intellectuals,â joked Jane as Brendan walked by the girls and smiled. Then she got serious. âHe likes you, you know,â she told Amy. âBrendan does. He told me. In the kitchen. In front of my parents even,â she smirked. âSorry you missed it.â
âSounds like it was a real moment,â Amy teased.
âOh, you bet,â she chuckled. âUnforgettable. I guess you can have this one.â
âOh, thanks. But I donât think Iâm readyâ¦â
âThen donât think ,â said Jane âThe Universe is offering you a gift. Just take it.â
Now Brendan approached.
âIâll see you later,â said Jane, and she stood up and walked off.
Brendan took Janeâs place on the couch next to Amy, and the charge of attraction she felt nearly caused her to faint. âSo did you really kill your boss?â he asked, and she was sure starlight shone out of his eyes.
She had to look away. âNo, not really.â
âDid you want to?â Brendan asked, flirtingly.
âSometimes, I guess,â she said, and smiled nervously. âI mean, really. Who doesnât want to kill their boss sometimes?â
âCan I take you to dinner some time?â he asked.
Amy looked over at Lauren, Jane, Clarabelle, and Enid, who were all standing together and nodding her
