âsparkling.â When she reached the far right corner of the stage, Mr. Jim nodded at her and she stepped off.
âThank you , Lexi,â he said. The judges applauded and jotted down notes.
âYou did it, girl!â Harleigh cheered as Lexi made her way backstage again.
âYour turn,â Lexi said, hugging her. âGo get âem!â
âHi, yâall,â Harleigh said brightly. âI am the gymnastics queen! With my flips and twists, I love to soar. My dream is to win a gold medal at the Olympics and make my parents and my country proud. I have faith that I can change the world, and I will do my best to help those in need. My guilty pleasure is making homemade pumpkin pie with my grannyâitâs the best! From Atlanta, Georgia, I am Harleigh Park.â
âThat was so good!â Lexi congratulated her after her runway walk. âYouâre so relaxed and real. I wish I could be more like you.â
âYou were perfect,â Harleigh told her.
âPerfectly awful,â said an icy voice behind them.
Lexi steeled her nerves and ignored Meredithâs snarky comment.
âThatâs right,â Harleigh whispered. âDonât you listen to anything she says. Youâre way better than her.â
âOh, weâll see whoâs better,â Meredith smirked. âMy talent routine is up next.â
âNow that âs a costume,â Ava remarked as Meredith stepped onstage. She was dressed in a black-velvet catsuit covered in gold stars. The lights dimmed, and the stars lit up and flashed to the beat of the music.
âYou must be my lucky star!â Meredith sang the Madonna hit as she tap-danced across the stage while simultaneously twirling a pair of batons in the air.
âA totally electrified costume,â Herbie marveled. Jenna shot him a nasty look.
âIâm not saying she should win or anythingâjust that from a technological standpoint, itâs nifty,â he added.
âHer singing and dancing isnât nifty,â Delaney groaned, holding her ears. âItâs awful. Lexi is way better than her.â
But the judges didnât seem to mind. They were mesmerized by Meredithâs impressive backdropâa black sky that flashed the words âSTARâ in neon lights. In the center of the stage was a giant silver crescent moon.
âWhat do you suppose that thing does?â Sadie asked. It was a split second before she had the answer. The moon suddenly floated up in the air as Meredith performed below it.
âAmazing,â Herbie gushed. âHydraulics as well.â
âItâs all flash and no substance,â Kylie insisted. âTypical Meredith.â But she watched the judgesâ faces and saw how easily impressed they were. As much as she hated to admit it, Meredith was stiff competition.
At the end of the song, Meredith bowed and tossed her baton high in the air. It flew up, up, up, right over the moon, but as it came down, it just missed her grasp. The audience watched in horror as it landed with a thud right on one of the judgeâs heads.
âOh! My head! My head!â the judge cried.
âDo we have a doctor in the house?â Mr. Jim announced in a panic over the microphone. âOur judge, Kat Grabel, needs a doctor!â
Lexiâs mom raced from her seat. âIâm a doctor,â she said, examining the judge, a former Miss Georgia. There was a huge goose egg on her forehead.
âHow many fingers am I holding up?â Dr. Poole asked her.
Kat squinted. âTwo? Maybe four? I donât know, yâall!â
âLetâs get some ice on that bump,â Dr. Poole said. âI think youâll be okay.â
Kat looked at Meredithâs backdrop. âBut Iâm seeing stars!â she moaned.
âThatâs the setânot your eyes,â Dr. Poole assured her.
Meredith looked terrifiedânot that she had hurt Kat, but
