will do everything to
make sure no one finds out what you did.”
I stared back at him, the man
making my heart bang against my chest. I was in his debt, but I couldn’t
tell him that. Instead, I would use his gratitude to keep him.
He looked over his shoulder at
Honey. “I don’t know how we’re going to dispose of her body.”
“Do it once Frano and the soldiers
leave.”
He looked back at me. “Some will
still remain here.”
“Then we’ll be careful.”
“Or, I could just tell them you
were defending me against her.”
“No, they’ll link her death to the
soldier’s one.”
“Then we can make it look like Rita
killed her.”
“What would her motive be?”
“Honey saw her trying to escape.”
“That could work—if Rita isn’t
found. Still, we need to get Honey out of here.”
“I’ll take her to her room.” He
bent down and scooped her up.
I willed myself to not look at her,
the blood tainting her blonde hair making me want to throw up. I followed him out
of the bathroom and to the door. I opened it and poked my head out; making sure
the passageway was empty. “All clear,” I said, opening it wider for him.
He walked out, not caring that he
was naked. He carried the woman down the passage to her room. Once he was
inside it, I closed the door and ran into the bathroom. I turned on the shower,
desperate to wash the soldier’s cum off me. Tears fell along with the water. I
didn’t feel guilty over the soldier’s death, but Honey’s... I let out a sob. I
had liked her, even when we’d argued. And although she’d taken advantage of
Jagger, I didn’t blame her for it. I would’ve done the same thing in her
position, and now she was dead—all because of me.
Noise came from the bedroom, the
closing of a door. I turned around in the shower, seeing Jagger enter the bathroom.
He opened the shower door and stepped inside, his expression so sad. He leaned
forward and kissed my forehead, letting his lips linger there for a moment
before pulling back. Without a word, he took the soap off me and started
washing himself, his eyes not leaving my face. Once he was finished, he put the
soap in its holder, then rinsed his hands.
“No one has ever fought for me
before,” he said.
“I doubt that,” I replied, my mind
going to Alberto, Honey, and the Padre . They had all fought to get him.
He shook his head. “You fought for
me, not against me.” He took a hold of my face, staring at me with adoring eyes.
They were even more golden than usual, the brown in them hardly noticeable. “You
are tremendous, Camila, a truly strong woman, much stronger than I could ever
be.”
I let out a racking sob. His words
meant so much to me, yet they also tore me apart after what I’d done. I didn’t
deserve the praise he was giving me. I hadn’t done it for him; I’d done it to
save my own neck.
He ran the back of his hand down my
cheek. “You are so beautiful. Frano’s a fool to choose Rita over you.”
Another sob shuddered out of me.
He started kissing my tears away.
“Don’t cry, bella , I only want to see you smile.”
“But I killed Honey.”
He placed his forehead against
mine. “No, you defended me, and now I will defend you. I give you my word I will
protect you anyway I know how. You are my woman now.”
I let out another shuddering sob, stunned
that he was calling me his woman. All thoughts of marrying Frano flittered out
of my head with those five simple words. I no longer wanted to marry the Don, I
wanted to marry Jagger.
He wrapped his arms around me, pulling me to his
body. I wrapped my arms around him too, not wanting to let go. Noise came from
the front yard, the sound of cars leaving. I didn’t care what was happening out
there. All I cared about was being with Jagger. He was worth killing for, and
now I knew I was capable of doing it, no one was going to part us.
Ever.
