You know how crazy I am about Uncle James.â
âYou mean Miss Penelope ,â Kina corrected her. âHe stopped going by James years ago.â
Lawson rose. âWhether heâs Penelope or James, Iâm still going to love him, but wrong is wrong. If the Bible calls it perversion, I do too. Do I have to remind you what 1 Corinthians says? âDo not be deceived: Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.ââ
Kina cocked her head to the side. âWhat if youâre born that way?â
âWeâre all born into sin,â disputed Lawson. âYou can get born-again.â
Angel nodded in confirmation. âYou better say it!â
Kina rolled her eyes. âWell, lesbian or not, Joan seems like a genuinely kind person who I would like to get to know better. Thereâs nothing wrong with the two of us being friends.â
Angel raised an eyebrow. âThe same way thereâs nothing wrong with a little bump and grind?â
âThere will be no bumping or grinding,â maintained Kina. âJust a little coffee and conversation every now and then.â
Angel reached for more clothes to fold. âJust be careful about what you get yourself into. . . .â
âOr what gets into you!â added Sullivan.
Lawson held up a charcoal double-breasted wool coat and pressed it against her five foot two inch frame. âIâm surprised youâre giving this away, Angel. Itâs beautiful.â
âYeah, I donât think Iâve ever seen you wear this before.â Sullivan checked for the designerâs label. âAnd I know Iâve never known you to invest in Burberry.â
âYou would see me in it if Duke had his way,â murmured Angel. âThis label says Burberry, but this is actually from the Theresa King collection.â
Lawson was surprised. âWow, Duke finally decided to get rid of Theresaâs old things. I think that a positive step in the right direction, donât you?â
âI would if heâd thought of it! You have no idea what an uphill battle it was to get him to agree to do it,â lamented Angel. âDid I tell you that he asked if I wanted to keep Theresaâs clothes for myself?â She shook her head and continued to sort through the clothes. âThe whole thing just weirds me out sometimes.â
âMaybe heâs just sentimental,â suggested Kina.
âMaybe heâs still in love with his dead wife!â spat Sullivan. Lawson and Kina glared at her with stone faces. âWhat? Was I not supposed to say that out loud? All of you were thinking it.â
âDukeâs not in love with Theresa; heâs in love with me ,â contended Angel. âItâs just taking all of them awhile to grieve. You have to give people the time and space to mourn in their own way.â
âYou had to know this was going to be an issue, Angel,â voiced Sullivan. âHe was married to you for two years, but he was married to her for nearly ten. They have children together, and if Theresa hadnât gotten sick, theyâd probably still be married.â
âHe wouldnât have asked me to marry him and move into his home if he didnât love me.â
Lawson stepped in. âWeâve never doubted Dukeâs love for you, Angel, but donât underestimate his love for Theresa either.â
âDang, is this what itâs come down to?â asked Kina. âI used to think women had to look out for anything in a skirt. Apparently, now weâve got to be worried about anyone in the dirt too!â
Angel remembered her motherâs warning given to her as a teenager. âMama always said there are two people you canât compete with for a manâs attention because you can never be either one of
