something that could easily wait.
Now the two sisters â with the baby perched on Graceâs knees â sat in the kitchen, filling Sam in on the rest.
âOK.â Sam turned his attention square on Claudia. âYouâve spent more time than Grace with this guy. Do you feel he could be dangerous?â
âNo way,â Claudia said. âHe was mean, obviously â it was a mean thing to do, to say the least â but I never felt threatened, not in any physical sense.â She looked at Grace. âDonât you think Iâm right about that?â
âHe has sneaky eyes,â Grace said.
A thought occurred to Claudia, causing instant, fresh distress. âI hope you guys donât think I knew he might follow me here?â
âOf course we donât,â Grace said.
âIt never entered my head, orââ
âClaudia, honey,â Sam said, âweâre not blaming you for this. I just need to know what this guy wants.â
âPresumably,â Grace said, âwhat he wanted before.â
âMoney.â Claudiaâs eyes filled with tears. âIâm so sorry.â
âItâs all right.â Grace stood up and put an arm around her sisterâs shoulders.
âI need to know a little more,â Sam said. âAnything you can tell me.â
âHeâs a scumbag,â Grace said.
âI should go home,â Claudia said. âI shouldnât have left.â
âYouâre not going home till youâre good and ready.â Sam got up, went to the refrigerator, took out a jug of orange juice and offered it to the women, who both shook their heads. âAnd definitely not because this blackmailing creep showed up here.â
âHe didnât actually try that again,â Claudia said.
âOnly because we didnât let him in,â Grace said.
âHeâll be back.â Sam drank a glass of juice and checked his watch.
âYou have to go,â Grace said.
âAlvarez knows Iâm here, so I have some time.â
Life had become a little easier in the department ever since Sergeant Kovac, one of the banes of Samâs and Martinezâs working life, had transferred out of Violent Crimes to Strategic Investigations and been replaced by Mike Alvarez, who was definitely one of the good guys. With no progress to speak of in the rowboat homicide, however, and the Leehy case fresh in their laps, Sam didnât want to push his luck.
âIâm going to ask a patrol to swing by a couple of times as a personal favour â no reports filed, donât worry.â He saw the sisters glance at each other. âIâm not happy about leaving you here at all,â he added. âSo take it or leave it.â
âWe were going to go shopping,â Grace said.
âJust over to Bal Harbour,â Claudia added.
Grace saw his hesitation. âAfter all these years, Sam, Iâm not prepared to let Frank make me a prisoner in my own home.â
âThis isnât about your father,â Sam said.
âIn a way, it is,â Grace said. âBy extension.â
âOK.â Sam gave in. âBut if you see him, just go sit somewhere real public and call me right away, and if he comes back here after you get back, do not open the door till I get here.â
âYou canât keep shuttling back and forth,â Grace said.
âIf some jerk plans on hassling my wife and sister-in-law,â Sam said grimly, âyouâll be surprised how often I can shuttle back.â
