about Stevieâs interview, including the hat. It was a useful way to change the mood because the image of Stevie in the feathered hat was so hilarious.
âAnd I guess she wonât be the only one with a new look this summer.â
âYou have to wear a uniform while you mow lawns?â Lisa asked.
âNo, of course not,â he said. âBut I will be spending the summer in the great outdoors, getting a tan that will be the envy of everyone but lifeguards.â
âYou be sure to wear sunscreen,â said Lisa.
âDonât you want me to be a bronze god?â
âBetter to be pasty white than to have skin cancer.â
âMaybe a little tan?â
âMaybe,â she said, relenting. âJust a little. If you get too handsome, the girls will all be after you, and I donât want that!â
âIâll beat them off with a stick,â Alex promised.
âThatâs what I like to hear,â Lisa said. âNow, here are my CDs. Which ones do you think I canât live without for the summer?â
Alex studied the CD holder and started pulling out boxes. He made three piles. âThese are mine that you borrowed,â he said, pointing to the first pile. âAnd these are yours that you should take with you.â
âWhatâs the third pile?â she asked.
âYours that you want to lend to me for the summer,â he explained with a smile.
She was about to protest when the phone rang. She walked into the living room and picked it up.
âHey, Lisa! Youâre there. Itâs Skye. Iâm on a quick break, so I donât have long to talk, but I heard youâre coming out hereâthatâs great! Listen, will I get to see you?â
âI donât have a lot of plans, like, for instance, Iâm not in any television shows or anything. My schedule is pretty much open. Youâre the one with all the work.â
âWell, not so much I canât visit with friends sometimes. And thereâs something else.â
âWhatâs that?â Lisa asked.
âUm â¦,â he said. âI guess itâll be better to talk about it when you get here. Whenâll you arrive? Want me to send a car?â
âNo thanks, Skye. My dadâll meet me.â
Alex peered through the doorway, looking curious. âWho are you talking to?â he whispered.
âSkye Ransom,â she mouthed back.
The concern on Alexâs face was immediate and obvious. She shook her head as if to dismiss his worry. She slipped her hand over the mouthpiece. âJust a friend,â she added in a whisper.
Alex nodded broadly in a general display of disbelief.
âLook, youâre going to be so busy itâs going to be awfully hard for us to get together,â Lisa said, as much for Alexâs benefit as Skyeâs.
âNever too busy to see a friend,â Skye told her.
âIâll call your service when I get to my dadâs house and we can talk.â
âGood idea,â Skye said. âBut why donât you call me at home? Youâve got the number, right?â
âRight,â she said. âAnd you have my fatherâs number in case we get crossed up.â
âOf course,â he said. âFrom the last time you were here. That was so much fun, wasnât it?â
âYes,â she said, remembering the great time theyâd had when she had come to California for her fatherâs wedding. Lisa was uncomfortable with the idea that Alex might misinterpret what Skye was saying to her, so she was revealing as little as possible about the other end of the conversation. But she was also uncomfortably aware that Alex knew perfectly well what she was doing.
âI bet you have to get back to the set now, right?â
âWell, in a minute,â Skye said.
âOkay, then Iâll talk to you when I get out there.â
âItâs a date,â he said, and hung
