“You are not going back there.”
    She’d gotten up from their—he’d lost count—last round and
wanted to go police her fucking house for clues.
    “I am. You can’t stop me. Just quit it.” She turned and
grabbed one of his sweatshirts, those scars screaming at him.
    “No.” He did grab her, but not by the hair. Just by the
shoulders. “You’re mine to protect now, baby.”
    “I have to protect myself. You protect your pack.” She
smelled like home and he wanted to shake her.
    “I keep telling you that you are my pack.” Did she think he
would let her go?
    “I know. Stubborn ass.” She wouldn’t meet his eyes. “I can’t
be pack, not until I fix this.”
    “Oh, baby.” God, he loved her. Ever when she made him crazy.
He kissed her nose. “We solve this together.” That was what pack did. Shit, he
had the whole male population of his pack looking for this guy.
    When the fucker was flushed out, Brett was going to tear the
bastard’s throat out and let his woman have the heart.
    He wasn’t sure who the hell had been her pack alpha before,
but shit, he hadn’t done right by Wendy. It had nothing to do with sleeping
with her, either.
    He’d protect any of his pack to the death. Any one of them.
    Wendy sighed, kissed him and the kiss tasted of goodbyes.
    Brett held on as long as he could, but she slipped away. She
needed to feel independent, but he had to make sure he watched over her too.
    She pulled on her clothes, tied her hair up and strapped on
her gun. Mongo followed her, whining softly, tugging at her shirttails.
    “I know, buddy. Stay here with Brett.” Mongo growled, head
shaking, and she sighed. “Stop it.”
    “I’ll look after him.” Brett stepped up to put a hand on
Mongo’s head.
    The pup looked at him, surprised.
    Wendy chuckled softly, the sound wry. “I have to get out of
here. You make me stupid.”
    “I don’t want you stupid, baby. Just safe and with me.”
Hell, who was he kidding? He just wanted her.
    “I don’t want him to hurt you. He’s strong, fast.” Her lips
tightened. “Vicious.”
    “I’m pretty strong. Fast.” He could be brutal, but she
didn’t need to hear that.
    “I thought I was too.”
    “You are.” Males were always bigger and stronger. It sucked
for her, but that was the way of the wolf. The guy was a fucking coward,
though, which gave Brett the advantage.
    “At least this time, I have a weapon.” She went to him, as
if she couldn’t help herself, and he got it. He wanted to hold her, to wrap
around her and explore every inch of her body and then start over.
    His arms wrapped around her, his chin resting on her head.
“You have a lot more than that.”

    Her words were broken off by a sharp bang, the downstairs
door crashing open. “Brett! We need you! That fucker took Shaw down and he’s
got their woman! Jordan’s lost his shit!”
    Wendy yanked away from him, eyes pure wolf. “Steph? Oh,
fuck.”
    Brett snarled, instinctively putting Wendy behind him as he
went to the top of the stairs. “How long?”
    “We heard Jordan screaming ‘bout half an hour ago.” Sam came
in, carrying Shaw, who was out, pale. Jerome followed, dragging Jordan along,
the man fighting hard, torn up, caught in between man and wolf.
    “Goddamn it.” He flipped a glance over his shoulder at
Wendy. “Get me some clothes.”
    There was nobody there. Nothing but a pile of clothes and a
shoulder holster.
    No. No fucking way.
    He growled, teeth baring. “Where the fuck did she go?”
    Jordan snarled, foaming. “They took her!”
    “No. Wendy. She was right behind me. Goddamn it. Sam. I need
you on her scent. Jordan, tell me everything.”
    “I was patrolling. I came back and Shaw was out, bleeding,
and she was gone!” Jordan looked at him, panicked. “Brett, help me!”
    “We’ll get her back and we’ll kill this son of a bitch.” He
went to Jordan, touching the man’s shoulder, knowing it would help ground him.
