Chapter 2
Stakes
Mary turned to Mr Blood. âAre you going to wait outside to catch the vampire?â
âYes,â said Mr Blood.
âAnd we will wait in here on our own, with Anaâs body?â said Edgar.
âYes, that is my plan,â said Mr Blood.
âBut, if this vampire feeds on the blood of the deadâ¦â said Mary.
âAnd there is a dead body here with us in the chapelâ¦â said Edgar.
âYes?â Mr Blood snapped.
âWell, the vampire might come for Ana,â said Mary.
âMaybe it will,â Mr Blood said. âThat is why I need you to wait here with the body. But you will be quite safe.â
âI hope you are right!â said Edgar.
âOf course you will be safe. That door is the only way into this chapel.â Mr Blood pointed at the huge oak door. âAnd you can bolt the door from inside.â
âBut we canât lock the door with a key,â Edgar said.
Mr Blood ignored him. âYou must not let anybody in, apart from me,â he said.
âShouldnât we wait outside with you?â said Mary.
âNo,â said Mr Blood. âYou are safer in here.â
âBut we want to help you hunt the vampire!â said Mary.
âNo, we donât.
I
donât want to sit in a graveyard waiting for a vampire,â said Edgar.
âI want you to stay in here. But thank you for the offer, Mary,â said Mr Blood.
He gave each of them a large wooden stake. âTake these. Remember, donât let anyone in.â
âYes, we know,â said Mary.
âGood,â said Mr Blood. âI will watch the graveyard. I will wait for this vampire to come for Ana. When it arrives, I will destroy it.â
âSo why do we need these stakes?â asked Edgar.
âJust in case something goes wrong. I am being careful, that is all,â said Mr Blood.
He went out into the graveyard.
âMake sure you bolt this door behind me,â he said.
Edgar and Mary stood in the doorway with Anaâs open coffin behind them.
Mr Blood looked among the gravestones for a place to hide.
Chapter 3
Waiting
âI wonder what Ana was like,â said Mary.
She took some bread and cheese out of the bag the priest had left. Edgar bolted the door.
âDo you want something to eat?â said Mary, with her mouth full.
Edgar slid the last bolt into place. He turned around. âAre you
eating
?â
âMmm,â mumbled Mary. âDo you want some?â
âNo, I do not!â said Edgar. He lit a candle. âHow can you stand there, next to a dead body, and stuff your face?â
Mary didnât care. âI wonder if Ana knew her body was going to be used as bait,â she said.
âNever mind her, sheâs dead!â said Edgar. âWhat about us?â
He went around the chapel, and lit all the candles he could find.
âUs?â Mary snorted. âWeâre not bait! The priest said this vampire only feeds on the dead.â
âHow does he know?â said Edgar. âMaybe the vampire feeds on the dead because they donât fight back. Maybe it really prefers hot blood from living people.â
âYes, who ever heard of a vampire that prefers dead blood?â said Mary. âMaybe it will come for us after all!â
She smiled and popped a piece of cheese in her mouth.
âI have a bad feeling about this,â said Edgar. âWhy do Mr Bloodâs plans always put us in danger?â
He walked up and down. âThis vampire is going to come looking for a dead body. And itâs going to find us. And when that happens, itâs going to think that it has been missing out on nice warm blood.â
âYes, and it will attack us! Fun, isnât it?â said Mary.
Edgar shook his head. âItâs dark outside. I bet the vampire is on its way here now.â
âI wish I was out there with Mr Blood,â said Mary.
âI donât
