you forget they will come storming over here.”
    “ Ok,” I replied.
“ I got a meeting to go to so I will be gone for a while,” Duke explained. “I can’t get calls where I’m going, so just wait to hear from me. There’s cash up there on the dresser. Go shopping, get whatever you want. Just make sure you answer when I call.” With that he walked into the bathroom and slammed the door.
I flopped back on the bed and kicked my legs. “Yes! Yes! Yes!” I excitedly whispered to myself. I started singing, Ain’t no nigga like the one I got!
I was going to be with Duke Carrington forever . . . or so I thought.

    Chapter 8—Let Me Upgrade You
I played it very cool until Duke left the condo for a meeting.
He had kissed me deep and passionately and told me he would be returning for more. He left me with a wad of cash and keys to the hot ass condo. He had me. Hook, line and fucking sinker. I would’ve married him that day if he had asked me to.
When I finally heard the door slam behind him I jumped up off the bed and picked up my cell phone. Mad or not, there was no other person I would call besides my BFF, my best friend forever, Diamond.
She answered on the first ring. “Hello, I’m sorry,” I blurted out. Funny and ironically, Diamond said the same exact thing at the same exact time. She started explaining to me that she was just uptight over the fight with Brian and that she would never pick Brian over me. Needless to say she and I made up on the phone. That’s how good of friends we were. We always made up fast whenever we had a falling out over bullshit.
“ Ok, enough of the sappy, sorry bullshit. Girl! Guess where I’m at!” I screeched excitedly into the phone. Diamond told me she was listening. “Diamond! I am in a fucking beautiful fifth floor condo in the Cosmo building!” I reported in a high-pitched voice. Diamond was screaming on the other end.
“ Wait . . . wait . . . girl you don’t know the half of it!” I continued. I proceeded to tell Diamond all about the raid at the club and how Duke picked me up. I told her about our fucking session. I knew her so well I could tell Diamond was on the edge of her seat listening to me. I know you don’t supposed to tell other women, even friends, about lovemaking sessions with your men, but I really did trust Diamond with my life. Then I dropped the bomb on her. “And girl, he gave me the keys to this hot ass condo and told me to move in!” I announced loudly. All of a sudden the line went quiet.
“ Did you hear me, Dee! He gave me a damn condo in the Cosmo building!” I screamed again.
“ Yeah, I heard you,” she replied weakly. “Girl, that is so good for you. I guess that means I’ll be looking for a new roommate, huh?” I could hear the sadness in her voice.
Shit! I hadn’t really thought about Diamond being left in the apartment by herself, without my half of the rent. “Well, since Duke isn’t making me pay anything, I will still help you pay the rent for awhile until you can find somebody to take my room,” I offered, feeling kind of guilty that I was leaving her.
“ You sure this is what you wanna do, Nini?” Diamond asked.
“ Hell yeah, Diamond!” I answered her excitedly, leaving no doubt what I thought. “Shit, what if Brian came and offered you keys to a brand new, fully furnished condo and told you that you didn’t have to pay shit? Let’s be real, you would be gone so fast I would be seeing smoke behind you.”
“ I guess you’re right,” Diamond said in a low tone. “I mean, this is what we both wanted for ourselves . . . a good man with money to take care of us. Just be careful and don’t fall too hard for that nigga. I heard Duke Carrington is known around Virginia Beach as a big time ladies man.”
I didn’t believe this shit. Not Diamond, but then again, why not Diamond. To me she sounded like she was hating on me again. I couldn’t understand it at all and it
