right in there?â whispered Arnie, pressing his head lightly against the wall.
Thomas didnât reply.
âI will come back,â he said to himself as he turned round to leave the room.
He jumped. Emily was standing there.
âWhere have you been?â
âI havenât
been
anywhere,â she said innocently.
âReally?â said Arnie puzzled.
âYes! Iâve seen
everything
. I finished laying the fire, turned round and the room seemed to change all around me. You were still asleep but soon woke. I wanted to speak but something stopped me like I was trapped in a sort of bubble â couldnât even reach out. All I could do was listen and follow. Until now.â
âWhy would that happen?â said Arnie, as they left the room quickly â him locking the door and pocketing the key.
âI donât know â but thinking about itâ¦â
âYes?â
ââ¦what if I can only be
with
you when you really need me?â
âHow do you mean?â he said.
âWell, like now with Thomas when things get a bit sticky â a nudge in the right direction?â
âYouâre to help out when Iâm stuck?â
âMaybe. Thatâs what it looks like.â
âI can cope quite all right â thanks a lot!â said Arnie, folding his arms.
âOk. So what are you going to do now?â
âI havenât decided yetâ¦Iâm thinking,â said Arnie obstinately.
Emily peered out of the landing window. âWell you had better be quick. Look!â
Several men had formed a little group on the lawn and were talking. They flashed their lamps towards the house.
âI think we might get paid a visit. Any minute!â
âIâm
still
thinking,â said Arnie struggling, âbutâ¦as youâre here and Iâm not quite sure what the best plan is at this momentâ¦what would you suggest we do?â As an option!â
Emily walked a little way along the landing â her mind turning.
âWell itâs Thomas theyâve come for,â she said gravely.
Arnieâs face fell. âWe canât hand him over!â he said, moving across to her.
âNo?â Emily looked blank. âWhy not? It might be for the best.â
âWhat?â said Arnie completely thrown.
âWell he has broken the law.â
âButâ¦heâs terrified!â
âI know, heâs a criminal on the wanted list! Traitor some might say.â
âBut he was made to run away. Itâs horrible out there â killing and blood and everything. How would you like it?â
âI wouldnât!â she admitted, âBut it wasnât me that signed up to go to war.â
âBut he didnât realise what it would do to him. How could he?â
âAnd thatâs a good excuse for packing it in? What would happen if everyone thought like him, I mean, where would we be then? Occupied thatâs what! Invaded by foreigners!â
âEmily!â he cried.
âIâm only looking at it from the other side of things,â she said calmly. âI donât want to be uncharitable â but this is bad.â
âBut I promised!â
âItâs
dangerous
Arnie. If heâs caught hiding here then we are in for it! Iâm just explaining the risks.â
âWhat risks?â
âWe could get hurt â those men out there are determined to get what they want, canât you see?â
âI just wanted to help!â
âI know you do,â she said coolly. Her eyes became still. âWe could perhapsâ¦â
Arnie raised his eyebrows. âWhat?â
ââ¦give him a sporting chance? Help him to get out of here unseen and thenâ¦itâs up to him.â
âYouâd do that?â
Emily smiled. âOf course I will. Weâre both in this together arenât we?â
Arnie nodded quickly.
Emily looked back
