keep destiny waiting.â
chapter 11
As they drove away from Liz and Chestnut, Ana held Pickles up to the window and waived his tiny front paws at them.
âWhat are we going to do with that dog?â Emily asked.
Ana looked horrified. âWe are going to take it home with us.â
âAna, your mom barely lets humans into her home, and we have to take off our shoes and our socks. There is no way in hell sheâs letting you keep a Chihuahua. Especially one named Pickles you found in a gas station.â
âYeah.â Brandon laughed. âEm has a point.â
âDonât call me that,â said Emily.
âAnd donât you be such a spoilsport about my dog,â Ana said.
âAna, itâs not even your dog,â Emily said. âYou stole it.â
âAll I know is that any man who would kick this beautiful boy should not be considered worthy of a second thought. Neither should any puta who would leave her dog with that scumbag.â Ana nuzzled Pickles close to her chin while Brandon fed him a Dorito. âHeâs much better off with me.â
Emily started to point out that there wasnât even any way to explain to Anaâs mother where the dog came from withoutincriminating all of them, but Brandonâs cell phone let out a shrill ring in the backseat.
âBrandon?â Emily said. âAre you going to get that?â
âGet what?â
âYour phone, pendejo ,â said Ana. âItâs ringing.â
âNo, itâs not.â Brandon held up his phone. âItâs one of yours.â
âMy phone is crushed into a kajillion pieces,â Ana reminded him.
âShit.â Brandon held up a phone. âThis must be Lizâs. We have to go back. Maybe we can still catch them at the gas station.â
âNo way in hell.â Emily sped up a little. She was finally on the highway and she was not going to stop again until the beautiful sight of the Steinsâ mountain mansion swung into full view.
âAre you sure?â asked Ana.
âIf we take back that phone, we take back that dog.â As she said the words, Emily knew they would knock Ana out of the argument. She could handle Brandon on her own.
âYou play dirty,â Ana said, her eyes narrowed.
âThatâs so cold,â said Brandon.
âWhat? How is that cold ?â Emily was so tired of feeling like the stick-in-the-mud. She was tired of being exasperated with her friends. She took a deep breath. âAll I want is to get to this party, is that okay? We are already two hours behind schedule. If weâre lucky, weâll have an hour when we get there to freshen up and pull our outfits together.â
âWaitâoutfits?â said Brandon. âYouâre not wearing that?â
Emily looked at Ana. âDo you want to take this one, or shall I?â
Ana shook her head. âAy, mamacita . Heâs hopeless.â
âMe?â yelped Brandon. â Iâm hopeless? You two are talking about outfit changes and a party like itâs so important. I just want to get this poor womanâs phone back to her. I mean, for chrissakes, sheâs robbing gas stations to feed her kid . She doesnât have money for a new phone.â
âI honestly canât tell if youâre serious,â said Emily. âJust in case you are, lemme break this down for you. First off, if we turn around now and go back, the chances are very slim that Liz will still be at the Arco.â
âWell, we can just go back and meet them at the diner,â Brandon said.
âHave you lost your mind?â shrieked Ana. âThat place must be crawling with cops by now.â
Brandon sighed. âI just donât feel right about it. I mean, she did pay you back for your phone.â
âYeah,â said Ana. âBecause she smashed it to smithereens with a gun which she was using to hold up a diner .â
âI really
