something.
âWho is her family?â Kennedi asked.
âRumor has it that they are in the mafia,â Sheridan said.
âIt ainât a rumor,â Shay said.
âMafia?â Kennedi replied.
âYes. I heard her brother Lyn tried to get this meat packer in downtown Miami to pay some money he owed and the guy tried to stiff him. Workers came in the next day and this guy was hanging from his hands and his feet, tied up along with all of the other meat in the freezer. They had skinned him alive and let him bleed to death right there in the freezer,â Sheridan said. She looked like she was telling a horror story.
âWhat?â Kennedi said. âAre you serious?â
âThatâs just a rumor. We donât even know if thatâs true,â I said, just as the operator came on to give me the number. I pushed the button to be automatically connected. It was after nine so hopefully, someone would be at the office.
âThatâs just one of many rumors,â Sheridan said.
âAnd do you really want to find out if itâs true?â Shay said.
âWhatever,â I said. âEvianâs people need to be down here looking for her. This has nothing to do with me.â
My heart actually started racing when I heard someone say, âHello, Middle Eastern Cuisine Corporate Office.â
âYes. I need to speak with Clinton Javid, the owner. This is a friend of his sister, Evian. Itâs pretty important,â I said.
âYes, this is Mr. Javidâs assistant, Delana,â the woman who answered said. âHow may I help you?â
âWell Iâm trying to get in touch with Mr. Javid,â I replied. âItâs in regards to Evian.â
The woman paused. âEvianâs not available.â
âI know that. Iâm not looking for Evian,â I told the woman. âIâm actually here with her.â
âMr. Javid is in a meeting.â
âWell, this is important. Evian is kind of ummm . . . sheâs kind of. . . .â
âWhat?â the woman said, panicked. Her voice suddenly lost all professionalism. âOh my God. Please tell me nothing happened to Evian. That is Mr. Javidâs heart. He loves that girl to death.â
âNo, no, Evianâs fine.â
She actually released a sigh of relief.
âI know theyâre close,â I found myself saying. Something was telling me to feel this situation out before I started running my mouth.
âThatâs an understatement,â Delana said. âJust ask her exboyfriend.â The woman lowered her voice. âHe pushed her and letâs just say he doesnât have a hand anymore.â
âA hand?â I said, stunned.
âPeople are going to learn that this family is not one you want to mess with,â Delana said. Then, as if catching herself, she said, âIâm sorry. Let me see if I can get Mr. Javid.â
I actually started trembling, and I didnât even scare easily. âUm, no. No need. Evian just wanted to let him know that she was having a great time and that she would be home this weekend,â I hurriedly said.
The woman was momentarily quiet. âOh, okay.â
âSomethingâs wrong with her cell phone, so she just wanted to call the restaurant and check in . . . What, Evian?â I said. I donât know what made me try to pretend I was talking to Evian, but I felt that I needed to clean up this mess. âDo you want me to get him? Oh, okay. Iâll let him know.â Sheridan, Kennedi, and Shay were looking at me like I was crazy. I ignored them and kept talking. âEvian said thatâs fine, sheâll just catch up with Clinton later.â
âOkay, well, tell her I said hello,â Delana said. âAnd enjoy herself.â
âWill do.â I quickly hung the phone up.
âWhat? What just happened?â Sheridan said.
I let out a big sigh. âOkay, so you guys were
